Cause Of T. J's Downfall In Roll Of Thunder
Causes of T.J’s Downfall In the book Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry a 14-year-old black boy named T.J. Audry gets himself in a lot of trouble. The story takes place in Mississippi 1933. There were many causes of T.J.’s downfall like himself, R.W. and Melvin (two white boys who pretended to be T.J.’s friends), society and racism. One reason for T.J.’s downfall could be T.J. himself. T.J. wasn't always a careful boy, especially when it came to his words. One example of his carelessness is when he said ¨I'd sell my life for this gun.¨ (Page 108) for at the end of the book he let himself be persuaded by R.W. and Melvin to take the gun. T.J. also once was cheating on a test and blamed it on his friend Stacy Logan. On top of that, he even got Stacy's Mother fired from her teaching job. Since the Logans were mad at T.J. he lost their friendship and choose bad friends (R.W. and Melvin). Even though T.J. chose to go with R.W. and Melvin, you can't blame …show more content…
They believed R.W. and Melvin that T.J. was guilty without any proof at all. They called the Audrey Family names and beat them up. If the Fire in the cotton field hadn’t started, they would’ve hung the family. They are also the ones who fired Mama just because she wouldn’t sell her land back. Society and racism had a lot to do with T.J. amd his downfall (him almost getting hung and he is now in jail).
Therefore, T.J.’s downfall could have been caused by many things. Conclusion society and racism are the main reasons for T.J.’s downfall. It really did have most of the impact on T.J.’s life. It had an impact on how he acted and how others acted upon him. It was the reason T.J. got treated so badly, which lead to him falling so easily into R.W. and Melvin’s tricks, which eventually got him in jail, and now he might get put on the chain gang. Most of those thing wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for society and

Social control theory is, “The view that people commit crime when the forces binding them to society are weakened or broken” according to the textbook Criminology; The Core. “[Jeffrey] was a loner, who felt neglected by his family and did not fit in well with his peers,” due to this feeling he would constantly be alone and isolated from others and while his parents marriage was crumbling, his feelings of neglect and loneliness intensified drastically (Davis, 1998.) Dysfunctional and destructive relationships, especially with parents often lead to crime. Could Jeffrey’s antisocial and poor socialization skills be the cause of his criminal actions? Jeffrey has also been known to torture and kill many animals at a young age. Most mental health professions agree that animal cruelty is one of the childhood activities which correlates with psychopathic offending such as what Jeffrey partook in. Not only did Jeffrey torture and kill animals, he even had violent…

He lied, stole, and had rage towards those around him; at six he was a "drunkard," hanging about in taverns. He was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common people who were slaves or struggling.…

“To Kill a Mockingbird” takes place in 1930’s Alabama, where racism and segregation were accepted as social norms. Lawyer Atticus Finch defended “Negro” Tom Robinson in court, whom Mr. Ewell accused of raping his daughter. People considered defending a black man in court against a white man as a disgrace to the lawyer, his family and community. While Atticus talked to his brother Jack, he mentioned that “The only thing we’ve got is a black man’s word against the Ewells‘. The evidence boils down to you-did—I-didn’t. The jury couldn’t possibly be expected to take Tom Robinson’s word against the Ewells”. (Lee, 116-117) Atticus tells Jack that they don’t have enough data to prove Tom’s innocence in the case. The Ewells were not as respectable people as Tom Robinson, but according to the social hierarchy, dishonorable white people were above…

She agrees with Lykken that parents do have a impact on their children's outcome (i.e. Children that were not abused tend to make friends more easily than children that have been abused.) Harris states other causes for the rise in crime such as increase in violence in the media, and the lack of unity against an enemy since the Cold War. Harris uses or disproves specific examples; however, she also uses many reference to herself, and what she got out of certain statistics. This is an informative piece written for scholars. Since she makes references to herself it is important that the reading have a well rounded knowledge of the topic in order to form their own opinions based on Harris'…

The Scottsboro trials occurred in the 1930s and had nine African American boys aging from thirteen to seventeen and they were accused of raping two girls on a train. Eight of the nine boys were sentenced to death and one of them was too young for the death penalty so he was sentenced to life in prison. There was a lot of evidence that pointed to them being innocent. Like the two girls were examined by a doctor and he found no evidence of rape, but he was not called to court, but he told a lot of people. Also they found out the girls were prostitutes and they were crossing a border illegally so they covered it up saying they were raped. Later on, during the case one of the girls admitted that she was never raped. Also the boys were not in the same train cart as the girls (Johnson). The Scottsboro trials are a lot like Tom Robinson’s trial in To Kill a Mockingbird. The cases are a lot alike, because they both took place during the Great Depression and they both are rape cases. Also the towns took the white person’s side instead of the African Americans sides (Johnson). That is why the Scottsboro trials are like the trials in To Kill a…

Black people are victims of injustice, just like Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is a victim of injustice because even though he is innocent, he is found guilty of raping Mayella Ewell. The jury agrees and decides to make the black man guilty of the rape. “I shut my eyes. Judge Taylor was polling the jury: ‘Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty.’ I peeked at Jem, his hands were white from gripping the balcony rail, and his shoulders jerked as if each “guilty” was a separate stab between them” (Lee 214). Atticus does his best to defend Tom, but it was not enough to win the trial. The jury may have chosen the Ewells to win because Tom Robinson was a negro. Tom Robinson was shot and killed in jail, while trying to escape because he should not have been there in the first…
