Concussions have turned into a big problem in major sports and it has caused parents to rethink if their child should play an contact sport like football. A concussion is when there is an severe blow to your head that causes confusion and other symptoms like headaches. Many people believe that children under a certain age shouldn't be aloud to play contact sports like football. Others believe that parents and young children should be educated on concussions and how to ensure the safety of their kid if he/she has an concussion. There has been a ton of research that has proven that concussions are a serious problem in sports. Dave Duerson committed suicide because he knew something was wrong with his brain and he wanted other people to know about it. “Duerson committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest. He left a note with family members that asked that his brain be donated to the NFL's Brain Bank.”(Burke 2011) This was big deal for the NFL because it was one of the first cases that actually discovered that concussions cause problems in the long run. The NFL also took on a lot of criticism with the discovery of concussions. The NFL wasn't taking concussions seriously, however lately they have put in new concussion protocol and the NFL also hired concussion professionals to look for potential concussions that might have happened on a certain play. If a professional believes that a player suffered a concussion he can pull that player and have him checked out. This is an really good step for the NFL because they are showing that they care about their players and want to make sure the players are safe as possible. Not only the NFL is making big changes. Most of NFL equipment has been enhanced with sensors in the players helmet and if the sensor detects a high impact it will notify one of the coaches that a concussion might have been sustained. This would be perfect technology for high school players, but the technology can be very pricy and usually not possible for high schools to find the funds for that equipment. High school football coaches are required to take special classes to look for concussion symptoms and coaches can get in big trouble if they let a player go back on the field with concussion symptoms. Most schools also have Physical Therapist that helps look for potential concussions.
