Distracted Driving
The technological information age is the most rapid period of advancement in the history of civilization. This progress is largely made possible by the instant communication possibilities given by the internet. The ability to rapidly distribute information and ideas through telecommunication and the internet has facilitated developments in nearly every field, and thus is viewed primarily in a positive way. However, one must also account for the detrimental effects instant communication has had on society. For drivers aged 16-19, the leading cause of death is car accidents. Most of these deaths are caused in part by cell phone usage; including texting, calling, and internet browsing. Manipulation of a cellular device is proven to increase the risk of a crash by 300%-400% with use longer than two seconds increasing significantly more. The danger of potential accidents is not because of any one instance, but rather the widespread occurrence of cell phone use. In a study, nearly half of all high school students admitted to texting while driving in the past month. In 2013 nearly 300,000 adolescents aged 16-19 were injured or died due to use of a cell phone while driving. Surprisingly, this behavior isn’t due to a lack of education, a AT&T study in 2012 showed 97% of 15-19 year olds are aware of the risks involved with texting and driving. Hope is not lost however; legal consequences have been shown to impact usage behind the wheel. States who universally ban texting and driving, and make it a primary offense have seen on average an 8% decrease in fatalities within the first three months. After this period the decrease is less notable, which has been attributed to poor enforcement after the initial adoption of such legislation. With a relatively new technology that’s rapidly changing, such as telecommunications, it should be no surprise that some of the best ways to discourage cell phone use are related to technological changes. Newer cars are more and more being equipped with in-vehicle devices that make it safer for drivers to access their cellular device and many applications that are often abused while driving. Some in-vehicle devices move the focus of the driver to the dashboard of the car instead of their phones, therefore not completely diverting the driver’s attention from the roadway, but not fully maintaining complete focus on the
