Catholic Church Observation
On Sundays and Wednesdays, my family and I attend a Protestant church called Corinth Baptist Church. I have never been apart of a Catholic worship service before visiting one for this assignment. Many of the events in the ceremony were unfamiliar to me, but to my surprise there were numerous traditions that I do in my church.
By observing the decor of the chapel, I made the assumption that Jesus Christ was the center of attention. There were beautiful crosses everywhere and pictures of each moment of the crucifixion along the walls. Also, a statue of Mary , Jesus’s mother, was in the front of the sanctuary, and it had several candles around which made her look important. This piece of art was used as an alter for the church members. On the

One is the reader; this person’s job is to read the missal of the day to the rest of the churchgoers. Second are the altar boys who help the priest with preparation of the Communion. The service that I set in had teenaged girls in this role even though originally the name was specifically appointed to young males. The leader of the commemoration is called the priest or host; he is the significant figure who teaches a sermon, leads the Last Supper, and receives the confessions from the Catholic followers. These people walk into the chapel last with the Roman Missal book. The “altar girls” wore white robes called albes that symbolize purity. The leader wore a green robe called a chasuble and a priest stole; these articles of clothing represent the “Yoke of …show more content…
By just stepping into the parking lot, I could tell that the members dressed casually, because there were no dresses or ties. On the contrary, the congregation showed great formality through their emotions and actions during their Lord’s Day routine. For example, no one spoke unless they were reading, praying, or singing. The Catholics were very socially involved with each other too just like a family would be. Because of my observation, I can conclude many differences between my church and a Catholic church. First, Protestant unions get to nominate a Pastor of their choice, however in a Catholic correlation, the hosts are rotated every so often. Second, a church like mine has a Sunday School time for adults and children year round, but Catholics only have classes for kids during the winter months. Third, in my christian walk, I have a personal relationship with God, and I do not use a priest to declare my sins as Catholics

    Catholic Mass Experience

I chose to attend a Catholic Mass service at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. I selected this type of experience because I have never attended a Catholic service. I am an African-American female and I was raised in the Baptist faith. In my community there are very few Black people of the Catholic faith; therefore contacting a friend to attend the service with was impossible. I attended the service on a Monday. The service started at noon. The congregation was predominantly white. The African-Americans I saw were very few in number. Since I am a very open person I was really excited to attend the service. My family on my mother’s side are mostly Seventh - day Adventist and I was taught several ideas about the Catholic Church.…

On April 3, I visited the 9:00 AM mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Kirkland with my grandma who has been a practicing Catholic her entire life. The church had a very welcoming atmosphere. The church building is somewhat simple, without many of the top decorations. The architecture is simple, and resembles that of many other small churches. There is a steep area of the roof that is a common characteristic of a church's architecture. On the inside there were many rows of pews from the front near the altar to the back. On the altar there was an organ, a large cross, and a hanging, medium-sized stained glass.…

The Primary section of the service consisted or an Opening song, Greetings and Announcements, an Opening Prayer, Gospel, another Prayer, and Communion. The whole process took about an hour and a half. During the Opening song the atmosphere felt tense, everyone was very serious and it was easy to see the dedication in the crowd. It made me feel very excluded because my faith is not the same. During the greetings and announcements the tension broke and it felt more inviting while the Priest explained things that were happening in the church over the next week. The greetings were followed by an opening prayer, and then a reading from the Gospel. The same atmosphere of tension and focus returned. It seemed as though everyone other than me was possessed by the words of the priest. At this point two individuals in white robes with lit candles and baskets on polls began Collection for charity and the church. Growing up I went to a very small Baptist church where we just passed around a small basket for collections, so this process seems very overdramatic to me. After collections they started Communion where we had the option of being blessed by the priest, drinking the juice representing Christ’s blood, and eating the wafer representing Christ’s body. I would have guessed from the previous atmosphere that everyone would want to be part of this but only a handful of people participated. Mostly Parents with young children.…

On Sunday, November 14, 2010 I visited the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church of Toronto to attend the Holy Mass, which they call the “Great Matins” which starts at 8:30 a.m. The Holy Eucharist Church is located at 515 Broadview Avenue, in Toronto. I decided to visit this Catholic Church because after calling several churches to find out if I could visit to do my visitation report, this Church seemed to be more interesting because it was the only Eucharist Catholic Church nearby my grandparents’ house. This beautiful church sits atop the Don Valley and overlooks a beautiful park. Father Volodymyr Krivoglavyi, who is a Parish priest, leads the Mass. He is assisted by Father Josaphat Korchinski who is the assistant priest. The Deacons…

Ritual enables believers to receive a concrete and dramatic expression to beliefs within social and cultural settings. Rituals use signs, symbols, and vivid actions to raise feelings of belonging and transition. The Mount Alvernia College Diamond Jubilee Mass of 2016, enabled the Mt Alvernia community, Missionary Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (MFIC Sisters), parents and teachers to reflect on the 60 years that have passed since the opening of Mount Alvernia College. Unlike prior rituals, like the Build New Community mass from 2015 and monthly themed rituals, Mount Alvernia College amended many symbols, roles, and objects which reflects the ethos, beliefs, values, elements, structure and legacy of the college. The…

For my cultural report, I chose to go to a Filipino Christianity church. I was born and raised as a Buddhist and I don't really have a clue about the religion of Christianity. I also didn't have many Christian friends growing up, so I decided to pick the Christianity church because I was always wondered about the services at church. I had a lot of expectation attending the church service and I thought that everything were going to be like how they do it in the movies but I was very wrong.…

As mentioned before, members take communion near the end of service. Hymns were sung and there were also readings during the worship service, such as one from the Old Testament followed by one from the New Testament. Prayer was still a prevalent part of the services that I attended, and so it seemed that all of the main pieces of the Baptist and other Christian faiths were there. Tied into it were these mentions of Tweets and Youtube and Selfies that connected our newer generation to archaic teachings. I think students are better able to relate to the ancient teachings when they’re proposed in this way. By relating scripture to the students’ lives, UBC is able to better communicate the message of God as well as maintain presence and attentiveness throughout the…

We, me and my family, celebrated the mass 1st thing in the morning as the sun rise, at Anabu Kostal near Puregold Imus. It started 7:00 in the morning, with a greetings, an entrance song then so on and so forth. First in the march are the Altar Boys or Sacristans, Commentator, Lecturer, Readers, Lay minister’s and the Priest. The priest was wearing a white robe with a purple sash. The colors of the clothing of the priest’s are very symbolic in the Catholic religion, and white stands for purity and peace. The other altar boys were carrying candles while walking in a Christmas song as an entrance hymn, signifying the advent season. Advent prepares for the birth of Jesus. When the priest began his opening prayers, he bowed his head in reverence to Jesus and chanted the opening prayer. Many Catholic masses operate in a chanting manner.…

The window displayed within an arch on the North side of Saint Denis depicts scenes ranging from Jesus Christ’s nativity to the death of the virgin. Upon initial gaze of the window, a colorful array of glass is divided into 21 distinct sections with a total of 3 columns and 7 rows. The display of the scenes are systemized where the central column of the window contains the main sequence of Jesus that includes popular representations of Annunciation, Nativity, The Magi, Flight to Egypt, Boy Jesus in Temple, etc. The left and right columns of the glass serve as supplementary pieces that support the central story with images focused on Mary and Joseph as well as the Angel Gabriel—integral pieces that contribute to the main subject: birth, infancy, and boyhood of Christ. The intricate glasswork coupled with the sequential order of the scenes allow for the glass to deliver a comprehensive timeline that is able to capture even subtle details of the timeless stories.…

    What Is Jesus Crucifixion

“Christ Crucified” is a remarkable piece of art that portrays Jesus’ crucifixion. It was painted in 1631 by Diego Velázquez during the Spanish Baroque Movement and now is showcased in the Prado Museum in Madrid (Collins). It can be easily interpreted that the theme of this piece is sacrifice because it is a retelling of the moment Jesus ceded his life for his people. Diego Velázquez does an outstanding job of showing this theme along with retelling Jesus’ crucifixion and using symbolism through his use of detail.…

    Confessor Catholic Church

For my field research and final paper, I went to a Catholic church by the name of St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, which is located in Dana point, California. In the 1960’s Father Ozias Cook was the pastor of Our lady Fatima in San Clemente. It was from here that the Father gathered people to build a chapel to serve the people of that area (what is now Dana Point). In the early days as the parish was being formed the Baltimore Catechism was taught along with the traditional Prayer. As the population of Dana Point continued to expand the need of a church that was going to be permanent was pressing. The Building finally officially opened in 1980 to serve the religious education needs of the parish. This included being the only Catholic preschool in all of south Orange County. Over the years, the parish has collected donations and raised funds to expand and grow with the community so that they can welcome anyone that wants to join. The church was beautifully set up and felt like what I would have imagined a Catholic church were to look like. The service was a Sunday night mass that happened at 5:30 pm over Thanksgiving break. I attended the service with my close friend Ema and her family who have been members of this church for years after she had mentioned the church to me.…

The traditions of the Roman Catholic Church have been around for an extremely long time. The Roman Catholic Church and Protestantism both agree on many important things of the historic Christian faith. However the rituals and practices are quite different. The rituals and practices of a Roman Catholic Church consist of Mass, Baptism, Confession, receiving Communion, praying the Rosary, Last Rites, and much more. Whereas Protestantism was formed in the 16th century when it was separated from the Roman Catholicism during the Reformation. Many faith groups split from the Roman Catholic Church during the Protestant Reformation due to its strict structures and theological differences between other believers.…

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky. Fra Carnevale creates a mysterious, yet orderly, scene of subtle emotion and veiled heterogeneity.…
