Catholic Church Abortion
The presence of controversial issues has always been present in society, the main focuses may alter over time, yet there is a constant difference of opinions between two or more parties. An issue that is prevalent today is the morality of abortion. This subject has made its way to legal disputes and federal laws as it is not taken lightly for most. Some believe one will be taking a life, while others believe it will be stripping a woman from her freedom and rights. A main voice regarding this issue is the Catholic Church, who has established their stance on the topic very clearly. They have been a leading voice in the way this religion views abortion however, many pro-choice activists have made their voices heard with regards to the issue.

To begin with, pro-choice supporters have a different stance on whether an unborn baby is in fact a human. In the article “Should Abortion Be Legal?” it states, “Embryos and fetuses are not independent, self-determining beings, and abortion is the termination of a pregnancy, not a baby. A person's age is calculated from birth date, not conception, and fetuses are not counted in the US Census.” (“Should Abortion Be Legal?,” 2017, para. 8). Contrary to what Catholics believe, those in favour of abortion have the outlook that abortion does not kill a human as they need to further develop. Still dependent on their mother for survival, a fetus is not their own person, rather an embryo in a woman’s womb. With these facts in mind, abortion is not the taking of a human life; therefore, it is not morally wrong. In the eyes of a pro-life activist, one can make the argument that killing an unborn baby is the same as killing a regular human according to God’s teachings. Which can lead them to believe if killing a fetus is acceptable, what is the difference between killing a fully developed person? Furthermore, living in a society where abortion is illegal would ultimately be stripping a woman of their human rights. The article suggests that “The 7-2 decision stated that the Constitution gives ‘a guarantee of certain areas or zones of privacy,’ and that ‘This right of privacy... is broad enough to encompass a woman's decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy.’”( “Should Abortion Be Legal?,” 2017, para. 4). Pro-choice supporters believe that not allowing a woman to choose to conceive or not is in violation of her rights and freedom.
