The Castle
Australia has the terrible condition of having an essentially pointless, and prefabricated idea of 'Aussie-ness' that really has no relation to our real culture or the way in which we really sea ourselves. We, however subscribe to these stereotypes when trying to find some expression of our Australian identity. The feature film The Castle deals with issues about Australian identity in the 1990's. The film uses techniques like camera shots, language and the use of narration to develop conflict between a decent, old fashioned suburban family, the Kerrigan's and an unscrupulous corporation called Airline.

There are far to many stereotypes in The Castle to mention although her are a few examples, the accents, the barbecues, the holiday home at Bonniedoon, the boat, the clothes and the fact that one of them is in jail. Perhaps part of the success of the feature film lies in our ability to laugh at these characters, with no doubt of our own superiority. Whether it is working class Australia or the overseas, especially America, the certainty of superiority is desirable, and a film that promotes this will be successful.

The insistence on justice runs through the whole film, as Darryl fights to keep his house, the family home, which is being unjustly compulsorily acquired to make way for extension on an airport. Self-reliance is shown by Darryl's continual struggle, but this is balanced by the team work evident in the co-operation of the Kerrigan family and other neighbors who are also threatened. The 'Australian larrikin spirit', which some may see as positive, is portrayed by Darryl and Steve pulling the gates off the estate to one of the Barlow members, who are responsible for the acquisition.

It is this promotion of Aussie values that makes the film work so good. We are presented with the difference between ugly location and clothing and really good internal values. When Darryl offers to pay court costs for Jack, a neighbour on an old age pension, we see him

    The film industry determines the way we view our films. Australian films often backup the idea of the ‘Aussie battler/hero’. A battler/hero is known as someone who fights for what they believe in, their country, their heritage, their family, friends, dignity and pride. A battler’s job is to protect and hold onto what they are fighting for, whether it is for the good or for the bad. The Aussie Battler is known for being a working class citizen who commits there heart and soul into their work, land, culture and family. Many Australian films explore the concept of ‘Overcoming Adversity’ and explore into the idea of the ‘Aussie Battler/hero’. Wonderful examples of films that directly look into this idea of the ‘Aussie Battler/hero’, is Ned Kelly (2003) and The Castle (1997). Ned Kelly is a film based in the 70’s/80s about a group of young men, Ned Kelly (Heath Ledger), Joseph Byrne (Orlando Bloom), Dan Kelly (Laurence Kinlan) and Steve Hart (Philip Barantini), also known as ‘the Kelly gang’, fighting to preserve their heritage and remain true to their family. The director of Ned Kelly ‘Gregor Jordan’ has contributed the idea of how overcoming adversity can be problematic and difficult, but can also change society.     Have you ever spoken to your friend, and stopped for one second to consider not only what he is saying, but also how he is saying it? The language, the structure and what this tells us about his voice. One can argue that the ‘voice’ is incredibly important. It is the ‘voice’ that enables Human beings to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas orally to one another. Universally, we find there is a distinct importance on this idea, as despite the circumstance, the ‘voice’ provides us with important insights into the individuals and the messages they are conveying. However, in particular it is the language that individuals utilise at their exposure, which creates the power in their voice. For instance, we find that simple things such as the use of formal language juxtaposed to colloquial language, emotive language compared to rigid and objective language, all play a part in the representation of the ‘voice’. The film ‘The Castle’ and the song ‘You are the voice’ by John Fernham in particular, give us clear insights into not only the notion of voice, and how language influences ones voice, but rather Australian voices in particular. Throughout these texts, the power of language is used to represent ideas about the differences between the ‘authority’ and the ‘underdogs’ and their power and powerlessness respectively. By association, we find that the Australian voice is then further revealed through the exploration of language, as we see notions of justice, mateship and the Aussie battling mentality – central aspects of Australian culture and the Australian voice.…

Jeannette was felt ashamed of her mother and ended up going back to her home on Park Avenue. Jeannette feels guilty that she is the reason her parents are homeless and she is being spoiled with all these luxuries however, her mother and father reject all of Jeannette’s offers.
