OBJETIVOS DEL INFORME

El objetivo de este informe es realizar un análisis financiero y estratégico respecto al funcionamiento de la compañía Nucor. En especial, bajo consideraciones de implementar nuevas plantas siderúrgicas con tecnologías emergentes en el rubro.

ANTECEDENTES DE NUCOR

En 1987, Nucor que se caracteriza por ser una acería que utiliza como materia prima la chatarra, construirá una planta en base a una nueva tecnología que producirá acero de laminado fino, la cual puede ser una buena oportunidad dado el comportamiento del mercado del acero en los últimos años.

El proyecto que Nucor considera emprender, corresponde a la implementación de la tecnología de laminado fino a cargo de la compañía alemana SMS Schoelmann-Siemag. Esta nueva tecnología genera placas de acero laminadas de 2 pulgadas de espesor, dimensión 4 veces menor a los dimensionados que Nucor acostumbraba a fabricar. Con estas medidas, se producirían ahorros significativos en equipos, suministros de energía, mano de obra, etc.

Los datos proyectados para esta planta son de 850.000 toneladas al año, con costos operativos de 249,8 US$ por tonelada. Los gastos de incursión inicial, corresponden a 280 mil millones US$ en inversión inicial, 30mil US$ por puesta en marcha y 30 mil US$ por capital de trabajo.
