Cask Of Amontillado Revenge Theme
Edgar Allan Poe has so many flawless on wonderful stories that he has wrought over the course of his life, yet “The Cask of Amontillado” is one of the compelling story’s he has wrought. “The Cask of Amontillado” has everything in it, it has so much irony and symbols and so many different themes. There are three different themes that you can see within “The Cask of Amontillado” and they are betraying, gothic, and revenge. The first theme of “The Cask of Amontillado” if betrayal. Fortunato feels as though he is friends with Montresor. “My friend” (237), Montresor seas to Fortunato over and over again threw out the whole story. The first part that indicates a gothic theme is when Montresor and Fortunato went into the catacombs. When Fortunato said “to the buried that repose around us” (238) showing yet more of the gothic theme with in “The Cask of Amontillado”. Even with the themes of betrayal and gothic there is one theme that is the most dominant that is the theme of revenge. The story starts with Montresor vowing to get revenge on the one that has wronged him in so many ways. Montresor said “I given Fortunato cause to doubt my good will” (236). He is admitting to not letting Fortunato know he did not like him that he wanted is revenge to be secret and not seen by others. All through the whole story Montresor does everything he can get Fortunato alone and in a dark place so that he can exact his revenge. Poe is a great author with many great stories that we still read every day. “The Cask of Amontillado” on the other hand is one of the best short stories that Poe has ever wrought.
