Case Summary Worldzap
Worldzap can be best described as a sports video hub, providing news and highlighted full motion video clips of the games to the end users via cell phones. Initially when they started, the 3G services were yet to be launched. Worldzap was trying hard to emphasize on the push and pull service. If the end users wanted to know the scores or watch the highlights, that would fall under the push service. In case of pull service, the end users would visit the Worldzap site on their own, play trivia games, and be involved in other activities, when there are no live games taking place.
There are a total of 3 shareholders of Worldzap: Kirch Media, large media company which owns exclusive rights to variety of sport events. Fantastic Corporation, a Swiss based software solutions for data broadcasting company. Lastly, ETF another Swiss based company having financial interests in various high tech companies in European countries.
The various marketing tactics that were adapted by Worldzap were that, they would basic packages to all the operators and premium packages to the strategically best network provider. Under the premium package, the viewers can view the highlight or get the news almost immediately. Moreover, rare merchandizes, tickets for big games would also be available for the premium customers. The basic packages would include news and videos of the games which would be available at the end of the day or at the end of the week. The subscription fee would be separately mentioned in the client’s cell phone billing information, and will be collected by the network provider and would be adjusted accordingly with Worldzap’s bill. Another huge challenge faced by Worldzap is deciding the value of the content, and understanding the amount of money people would be willing to pay for the package. Moreover, there were issues regarding the share of the revenues among network operator and content provider.
Worldzap also wanted to have global coverage for sports. This is
