Case Study: Toys Of Hope
There are many needy children and families on Long Island. Too often parents cannot provide for their children the way they wish they could. Toys of hope is an organization that aims to help those families in need. The guiding principal behind their mission is that “all children, regardless of financial status, race, religion or nationality, are deserving of those things which can help give them a happier and more fulfilling life. A new toy can mean everything to a needy or homeless child. It provides fun and enjoyment and gives a child a sense of pride in having something of their very own.”

Toys of Hope is a nonprofit organization based in Huntington, NY. The organization was founded in 1994 by Melissa Doktofsky. Toys of hope operates

Toys of hope has been recognized by state and local governments, boards of education and the Governor of New York State, for their volunteer work and commitment to helping children and families in local communities throughout Long Island. The founder, Melissa Doktofsky, received the prestigious Martin Luther King “Living the Dream” award. The award is intended to recognize those whose work embodies Dr. King’s message of justice for all and commitment to community.

Known for "More Than Toys”, Toys of Hope offers nine programs to families in need throughout Long Island. The first program is called Adopt a Family, where you can sponsor a family in two ways. You can make a donation of $100 to $2500, depending on family size. Toys of Hope can also provide a list of items specifically requested by the family. You can purchase the items and they will then be delivered by Toys of Hope. The identity of the family is kept confidential, but some may provide a photo if they wish. The second program is Children for Change. This program helps children learn the value of helping those in need. Kids are asked to collect change, whether it be from their piggy bank or left over lunch money, and use it for donation. Toys of Hope has brought this

To date, this program has earned $7,876. The third program, Tzedakah program, is similar to Children for Change, but for the whole family. A Tzedakah box is a Jewish charity box. You place the box in your home and children can put their allowance or change inside. Parents usually match the donation amount. Toys of Hope hosts workshops for the whole family where you can create your own Tzedaka box to bring home. An $18 donation to this program provides one person with a month’s supply of shampoo, soap, hygiene items and a toothbrush. The fourth program is the Out for a Day program, which provides a day of fun for children and their families. Parents who are struggling to pay their monthly bills cannot afford the costs associated with going to places like the zoo, or a baseball game. Toys of Hope pays for admission tickets, snacks and even souvenirs. Places families have been treated to include: baseball games at Citi Field and Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Zoo, the Long Island Game Farm, Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree, arcades, aquariums and local museums. Families as small as three people, to groups of up to fifty children and adults

I am honored to be considered among the superior academic students at MCC and to be applying to the National Honor Society. If I am accepted into the National Honor Society, a service obligation that I would like to propose is collecting items for the babies and mothers in the Genesis House here in Melbourne. The Genesis House is a donation run organization that not only helps pregnant mothers, but also mothers who have newborns or young toddlers. I feel that this project would make an impact on many people’s lives. Most people in our world today believe that people in the Genesis House of Melbourne are fine because they have the volunteers there to support and care for them which sadly, isn’t always the case.…

Levin Furniture is a family-owned furniture retailer chain with 35 locations in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The current president, Robert Levin, has upheld the Levin family tradition of acknowledging the importance of excellent service, quality products, and reasonable pricing for their customers. In addition, the company is known for its commitment to assisting the local communities by actively participating in community events and fundraisers, as well as donating to charitable causes. One charitable cause is the “Beds 4 Kids” initiative, which partners Levin Furniture with the Cleveland Food Bank (CFB). When a customer orders a new mattress, they have the option to sign up for the removal or non-removal of their old mattress. The mattresses removed by the delivery team are donated to the CFB where they are inspected and sanitized prior to distributing them to less fortunate children. I was fortunate enough to participate in the Operation Backpack event at the Levin Furniture location in Avon, Ohio. Operation Backpack campaigns at events countrywide to collect back to school supplies, including backpacks, for homeless children that need basic supplies for their first day of school.…

The recently had a benefit concert and all the profits went straight to helping the youth. Because of their great strides and selflessness, enough money was raised to erect a 30-apartment residence for the LGTBQ youth in New York. (Peters) It is that kind of effort that pays off. The foundation put something to their minds and they got something done. These youth do not want a handout either. Some of them are self-sufficient and all they want is a safe place to lay their head. They try so hard to just find a safe place to stay and they end up with the wrong person they picked up at a bar “cuddling” for a night and are out on the street then next morning.…

Parents struggle to provide for their children on a daily basis and when their efforts are not enough, sponsoring their child can save lives. In poverty stricken areas, child education is not high on the priority list, but education is the key to ending poverty. Kids with an education can get jobs and live in comfort knowing that money is not an issue. Sponsoring families gives them the money for food, living expenses, and education. Most organizations, such as Plan International and World Vision, ask for one dollar a day and will update the sponsor annually with pictures and letters from the child. The impact of just one dollar is endless. A family near the Congo border was given the money to buy a goat named Luck from Heifer International. This goat provided milk that the family both drank and created an income out of. In turn, the money earned was enough to send their daughter to school, and eventually college (Kristof and WuDunn 254). The difference the couch change of a generous person can make is…
