RE: Kennel Assistant position

Dear Ms. Jackson,

I am interested in the position of Kennel Assistant at your clinic that I saw posted in the classified ads of the Tulsa World. I graduated, with honors, in May of 2013 with my bachelor’s degree in Biology, as a pre-vet major. I will be applying to Oklahoma State University Veterinary Medicine program in the fall of 2013. With my pre-requisites completed, I am anxious to gain additional experience in a veterinary practice.

I worked for Dr. John Doe, DVM for the summer of 2012. The patients in his clinic included

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is affecting many combat veterans returning from the current wars or those that have returned from the past wars. PTSD can affect the veteran for the rest of his or her life if not found and treated early. Some may self-medicate to help numb the pain from memories. Research has and still is being conducted to find alternative ways that do not use prescriptions. Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) uses many different types of animals (e.g. cats, dogs, or horses) for therapy. Through research it has been discovered that having an animal helps relieve PTSD triggers in many veterans. Service…

What is it about the presence of a dog or the touch of its soft fur that allows people to feel at ease and comfortable enough to release their emotions? Animals, the vast majority being canines due to being domesticated and easily accessed and trained, have been used in hospitals, schools, prisons, and other settings for years in order to bring about a therapeutic change (Megan A. Souter & Michelle D. Miller, 2007). Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a type of therapy that uses trained animal interaction as a form of treatment to ameliorate an individuals physical, emotional, and social well-being. Interacting with an animal-whether playing with it, caring for it, or simply petting it- is believed to have many positive effects on a person.…

As a freshman in college veterinarian school seems like a daunting and almost impossible task. Many upperclassmen I’ve talked to have told me that to get into veterinary school you must have a 4.0. With all this being said I’ve also met colleagues who had a 4.0 and yet their application was rejected. After searching for the million dollar question of “ What I can do to increase my chances of getting accepted into a veterinarian college” I stumbled across the website avma.org. Avma stands for American Veterinary Medical Association, its mission is to be an advocate for it’s 88,000 veterinarians members and to unite and improve the veterinary profession as a whole. This website was the golden answer to all of my questions, in the article “ Veterinary School Admission 101” it contains a list of steps, tips, and insider tricks that are aimed at giving you the best chance possible of being accepted into Veterinarian School. As a small animal science major and one of the thousands of undergraduates applying to veterinarian school, I want my…

Many programs developed for adolescents and young adults in treatment provide opportunities to form a bond with an animal, take responsibility for its care, and experience empathy and nonthreatening affection. Animals elicit a wide range of emotion and behaviors especially in human children (Hanselman 2001) concluded that Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) “increased feelings of happiness, security, and self-worth, and reduced feelings of loneliness, isolation, and stress” among a group of adolescents in an anger management group. Santana’s (1994) work with children receiving AAT showed that the children demonstrated improved mood and reduced levels of depression. Beck and Meyers (1996) also provided evidentiary support that through the interactions…

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a fairly old practice, but it has just recently drawn a lot of attention and interest. The Delta Society (as cited by Nebbe, n.d.) defines animal-assisted therapy as the use of an animal in a goal oriented intervention. AAT is provided and documented by professionals. Furthermore, it is designed to promote advancements in social, emotional, physical, and/or cognitive operation (Nebbe, n.d.). It is also important to note that animal-assisted therapy should always be an adjunctive intervention and not in isolation of other services (Fitchett, Granger, Helmer, Kogan, & Young, 1999). Almost any animal can be used in AAT as long as it is a pleasant, sociable animal. However, before animal-assisted therapy can be implemented, the client’s feelings and allergies to animals should be taken into account.…

Animal-assisted therapy can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks and when they used horse-assisted therapy to boost the morale of the incurably ill. After that, there is little documentation for the use and effectiveness of it until the 18th century in York Retreat, England. In York Retreat, there was a facility ran by Quakers where people with mental illnesses would roam freely on the ground around the animals.…
