Fruit flies have made a huge contribution towards knowledge about genetics, but for most people, they are just annoying insects that are attracted to their fruit. Their scientific name is Drosophila melanogaster, and to scientists, they have been a key to understand many principles of heredity including sex linked inheritance, epistasis, multiple alleles, and gene mapping. Fruit flies were the first organisms to be used for genetic analysis in 1910 by Thomas Hunt Morgan, and ever since, they have been used for genetic experiments (Ashburner).…

Vincor’s refreshment portfolio has been driven mostly by sales of its Vex and Growers Cider brands, which make Vincor the 2nd largest supplier of refreshment products in Canada. Canada Cooler and Tabu brands have not provided significant sources of revenue or growth for the company. Despite the existence of strong brands, the refreshment category itself has been shrinking by six per cent year over year. An innovative new product is needed in this category to help curtail this decline.…

The hypothesis of the fruit fly mating experiment was that when placing homozygous recessive virgin female fruit flies in a mating tube with two homozygous males of each wing type, vestigial and wild type, the resulting offspring would fit the Hardy Weinberg theory that the offspring types would be split equally between homozygous recessive vestigial winged offspring and heterozygous wild type winged offspring. This predicted result did not occur. 79% of the offspring produced were heterozygous wild type, leaving only 21% of the offspring produced homozygous recessive. There are a number of reasons that this could have occurred. The original homozygous dominant wild type winged parent fruit fly’s had far greater ranges of movement, speed, agility, and prowess compared to the homozygous recessive vestigial winged parent fruit flies. Due to their shriveled non-functioning wings, they had greatly decreased movement, and therefore, in theory, had a much lower mating success rate. Another theory as to the resulting number of heterozygous dominant wild type offspring produced could be due to the females selecting a more physically admirable mate. If given the option, organisms in nature do their best to find the mate with the best observable features to produce the most viable offspring with the greatest reproductive success. The parent homozygous recessive vestigial female fruit fly’s could have tried to mate with the parent homozygous dominant wild type males and not the competing parent homozygous recessive vestigial males, in the attempt to produce offspring with a greater survival rate and…

Vincor is a well established wine and wine-related producer based out of Mississauga Ontario. Vincor wants to use their current success and venture into the refreshment market by introducing a new line of coolers. In order to do this Vincor will have to decide what type of cooler to produce as well as the design, packaging, price and marketing strategy. Market research was conducted to determine who the consumers in the alcoholic refreshment industry were, what their interests were and what the current trends were. Vincor determined that 56% of Canadians 19 and older claimed to drink one or more of the different types of refreshment beverages. Of these, 57% of refreshment drinkers were determined to be female while 43% were men. Vodka or spirit coolers were found to be the most popular cooler choice, followed by wine coolers, hard lemonades and then ciders. There are currently several well established competitors in the market. Smirnoff Ice is the current market leader with their premium vodka cooler, Bacardi Breezer’s rum based cooler is a close second and Mike’s Hard Lemonade is also popular with both females and males. There are 5 different options available to introduce into the market. The options to produce are as follows: 1. Real Fruit Juice Cooler 2. Gin Cooler 3. Spring Water Cooler 4. Tequila Cooler 5. Energy Cooler Based on the information available we have determined that alternative 1, produce a real fruit juice cooler, would be the best option for Vincor. Research showed that fruit juice coolers were preferred most among the 19-22 year olds. It was also determined to be favoured among men and Quebecers. Qualitative research revealed that non-carbonation was a strong selling point, while natural sweetness resonated best of all. As a contingency plan, if alternative 1 fails, Vincor should consider offering the tequila or gin based cooler as these also had…

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Seaworld’s treatment of captive orcas recently. A documentary called Blackfish was released in 2013 that highlighted the abuse of killer whales at Seaworld. It also showed how the aggression of orcas in captivity has resulted in the death of trainers. Though Seaworld has denied inadequate treatment of their orcas, they have clearly been in distress. Drosophila melanogaster is a common fruit fly that has been useful for most experiments in the study of Genetics. The male and the female fruit fly are similar and different in regards to how they look, structurally. They are similar because both genders have a head, thorax, proboscis, antennae, eyes, and mouth parts. However, males are smaller than females and have about five abdominal segments as opposed to the seven that the female has. The life cycle of these fruit flies consist of egg, larvae, metamorphosis, and then adult stages. During the egg stage of their life cycle, the eggs are sunk into the food until they become larvae that spend all of their time eating. After, the larvae go through two molting phases called instars,…
