It was a chilly day on March 6, 2007. Me and my family were on 495 going to the Holy Cross Hospital with a slight delay of traffic. For some reason, I kept fiddling with my fingers, I was really nervous to see him. We took the exit 31A and we all shifted to the left since it was a sharp turn to the right. My big sister, Maisie, was on my shoulder and we shifted her head fell on my lap. She woke up and asked where we were. “We are almost there Maisie” my Dad said. We stopped at the traffic light and I fiddled with my fingers some more. “Stop fiddling with your fingers!” Maisie whispered to me. In my head, I say “I can’t, he is the first boy of the family, the first! Besides me!” I stopped fiddling and looked at the huge structure in front of me, The Holy Cross Hospital.…

The book “Hooked” by Dr Lonny Shavelson is a fascinating read regarding the rehabilitation of 5 individuals (Mike, Darlene, Crystal, Darrell, and Glenda) dealing with heroin, meth, crack, and alcohol abuse. In the memoir, Dr Shavelson follows these 5 participants through their everyday dealings with the network of recovery facilities in San Francisco during the “open-door” policy implemented in the 1990’s, allowing addicts to seek treatment if they wanted. From what I gather, he noticed the chaotic nature of these participants replicated and correlated the with chaotic nature of the rehabilitation system in San Francisco during that time. In the following paragraphs, I will attempt to explain the issues related to alcohol and substance abuse…

The most interesting example to me was the sex role reversal in nature example of seahorses. Male seahorses take on the role of the caregivers instead of the females in nature, which was once believed to be the opposite of the “structure” of nature, the female seahorses are the ones who look for a male who is interested in them, so they are the ones hunting for a mate. This is interesting to me, because what is happening here is the opposite of what human beings believed was the order of “life” for a large frame of human history. We have proof that nature can go against our socially accepted norms. It has always been a widespread belief that females are the ones…

I attended this meeting because of all the good work that, I had heard the Stephen’s Community House has accomplished in the north-side neighborhood. The first thing I was impressed with was the complexion of all the participants at the meeting, a sure sign of clean living. After the meeting began I learned that most of the participants were fifty years of age and up, celebrating between fifth-teen and twenty-five years of sobriety. I felt blessed just to be in…

When I first entered Mercy Learning Center it felt like a positive atmosphere where everyone wants to learn and excel. Everything and everyone had their place; I saw a lot of people walking into their classrooms and faculty members discussing to each other. It felt like I was in a school and the atmosphere also felt safe. I spoke to the receptionist and she called in the Volunteer Coordinator to show me around the building and where I would be helping out. I got placed in the Early Childhood Department, I was a helper to the teacher and her assistant. It was a great experience to get familiar with working with children. These children were the sons/daughters of the mother students in the center. When I was there I noticed that all the women there were trying to build a better life…
