Case study week 6
1. How can information technology help Rob Hay transform the winery's operations from an artisan approach where all planning is "in his head" to a more formal approach?

I highly recommend Chard Farm take mobile devise plus efficient system to improve business performance for whole organization.

First, Chard Farm has a flat hierarchical structure and 6 full time staffs. Each staff has own specific jobs and they have multi skills to handle their jobs. In this situation mobile devise and a professional system could improve communication performance. Making order, stock management and job completing report can inform to top management staff on correct time. Moreover, Rob Hay and top management could give the efficient advices and feedback to individual employee or all employees in real time.

Second, Mobile devise could bring benefits to employees to communicate with huge amount supply. Chard Farm supplies from a variety of both national and international which are approximately 50. They could use mobile devise go through social media talk to those suppliers. When they communicate with those suppliers, potential suppliers could give Chard Farm more information base on they required. They may have more opportunities to gain cheaper raw material.

Last, Mobile devises also can help Chard Farm to improve communicate with Manufacture. Manufacturing process is huge work. Chard Farm could track the manufacture process to gain the information to show customer or potential customer how they produce high quality wine to gain more profit.

2. Given that the winery has limited resources, what system should Rob Hay prioritize to improve the winery's operations? Why?

Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) is best choice for Chard Farm. Under Chard Farm situation and limited resources they just purchase a part of system which just includes Materials management, sales and distribution.

First, they need to co-operate with approximately 50

During my coursework I will be inventing an Ict system for Mr Robert black as he has approached me to help his new catering company ‘mobile lunches 4u’. There are a few business parks around the local area where Mr Black has decided that there are opportunities for a mobile catering business, selling snacks and drinks at lunchtimes to people who work at offices in the business parks. Mr Black has been running this business for about 6 months but has had trouble keeping records of his income and expenditure. This problem has occurred because since Mr Black has started is business he wrote everything by hand, he has faced problems like he was unable to read his writing due to messy writing and this caused most data to be read wrong which meant that all the calculation were wrong. This problem is a most common problem faced by company that do everything by hand and do not use an Ict system. For this reason I decided to help Mr Black by creating an Ict system for his company mobile lunches 4u. Moreover, this Ict system will be beneficial for Mr Black because he won’t have to worry about anything being misread or any wrong calculation, this mean he will be more organised and accurate. However, this is also constructive for his company because this will allow his company to become more professional and modern. This can be an advantage because most people like to eat and go to professional places which mean more costumers that can lead to more profit.…

The proposal the business students at the university made for Elizabeth might not be the correct structure for her business due to the layout they are proposing involving a repetitive operation design. With a repetitive operation, the product variety is low, the degree of standardization is high, and the throughput time is shorter. These are all characteristics that would not fit the business for a bakery. Her operation is Intermittent. A bakery is labor-intensive, because of the specialized orders taken by customers that Elizabeth and her business takes pride in. The workers need to be able to perform different tasks, depending on the processes needed of the products being produced. The student’s just proposing the production of the McDoogle pie in large volumes, changes Elizabeth’s whole operations from Intermittent to Repetitive. She would need to create an assembly line type of organization and still suffer from unused capacity because she would then be cutting out a large part of her companies products by no longer taking special request orders.…
