Executive Summary
NTUC FairPrice Cooperative Ltd is the leading supermarket retailer in Singapore. The company is known as a “supermarket with social conscience.” Its supply chain activities focus on developing effective strategies to improve product quality and safety by working closely with its suppliers in implementing standards and good CSR practices. Sellers need to ensure that the vegetables are safe for consumption and its supply is ample. FairPrice invested in a fresh food distribution center in 2002 to enhance its ability to move its stock faster and maintain freshness quality. The Good Agricultural Practices for Vegetable Farming (GAP-VF) certification ensures that local suppliers meet the standard but the certification does not cover overseas suppliers. FairPrice needs to encourage

Import is the major sources of ethnic vegetables in Canada. According to Statistics Canada, 2015, Canadian government import vegetables that worth about $3.5 million, although the exact amount of ethnic vegetable import is not known. South Asian immigrants are cultivating their culturally appropriate vegetables in community gardens, allotment gardens, and their backyards; however, these are not sufficient. To meet the demand of ethnic vegetables, it is important to replace the import with commercial cultivation. Considering the market potential, local growers of traditional vegetables need to be shifted to the commercial cultivation of ethnic vegetables especially those which are suitable for commercial cultivation. An additional support from the government is essential to promote this. Vineland Research and innovation Centre is experimenting the commercial suitability of South Asian vegetables including okra eggplant and yard…

Eco-fish will be an addition to the already booming organic food industry in Hong Kong. The organic and natural sector in Hong Kong has experienced dramatic growth in recent years due to rapidly rising demand for such category of products therefore the sector is moving more towards main stream. The local market is large enough to accommodate both giant and small players. Consequently initiatives such as the opening of Asia’s largest retailer for natural and certified organic food in Hong Kong highlight this trend. Thus at present there are over 300 independent natural and organic retail outlets. In terms of organic vegetables, the local industry predicts there are approximately 10,000 regular consumers of organic vegetables, and 100,000 non-regular consumers. Currently the demand exceeds supply and therefore over 60 long-abandoned plots of varying sizes in New Territories are converted into organic farms, and many farms in the Pearl River Delta have also switched to organic farming.…
