Anecdotal Short Stories Unit

How to Write an Anecdotal Story
Anecdote - A short account (or narrative) of an interesting or amusing incident, often intended to illustrate or support some point. Adjective: anecdotal.
Anecdote
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An anecdote is a short and amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person. An anecdote is always presented as based on a real incident involving actual persons, whether famous or not, usually in an identifiable place. However, over time, modification in reuse may convert a particular anecdote to a fictional piece, one that is retold but is "too good to be true". Sometimes humorous, anecdotes are not jokes, because their primary purpose is not simply to evoke laughter, but to reveal a truth more general than the brief tale itself, or to delineate a character trait in such a light that it strikes in a flash of insight to its very essence.
The word 'anecdote' (in Greek: "unpublished", literally "not given out") comes from Procopius of Caesarea, the biographer of Justinian I, who produced a work entitled Ἀνέκδοτα (Anekdota, variously translated as Unpublished Memoirs or Secret History), which is primarily a collection of short incidents from the private life of the Byzantine court. Gradually, the term anecdote came to be applied to any short tale utilized to emphasize or illustrate whatever point the author wished to make.

An Example of Anecdotal Writing
One example of writing an anecdotal essay is the ‘college essay’ or university entrance essay. This is an essay that accompanies an application to get into a school, college or university. The purpose of the essay is to give the prospective student a chance to stand out by saying something significant, creative and memorable about them self.
Presumably, being a Grade 8 student at BIS, you are not about to apply for another educational institution. However, because you’re a bright, creative thinker you can

For example it is used in All Over But the Shoutin’ which is a memior (also very similar to a autobiography) when his mother and other relatives told him stories about how his father was since he didn’t see him much and wasn’t around him much throughout his life. Storytelling is also used in genres and books that are very different such as Freakonomics on the story about the teachers cheating in the Chicago Public School System as referanced in the previous paragraph. Although storytelling is not only used in non-fiction by any means infact the majority of storytelling exists within fiction novels where often times the entire novel is one story. There is a countless number of novels where storytelling is a huge part of the piece of…

“When you’re writing a book that is going to be a narrative with characters and events, you’re walking very close to fiction, since you’re using some of the methods of fiction writing. You’re lying, but some of the details may well come from your general recollection rather than from the particular scene. In the end it comes down to the readers. If they believe you, you’re OK. A memoirist is really like any other con man; if he’s convincing, he’s home. If he isn’t, it doesn’t really matter whether it happened, he hasn’t succeeded in making it feel convincing,”…

The main issues of the memoir genre are that you cannot verify the veracity of the information given in memoirs, as well as a lack of effort in concealing the identities used in the stories. This leads to questions of nonfiction and the writer's integrity, as well as issues between publishers and people who feel victimized by portrayals of them in memoirs. However, memoirs are a captivating type of literature for all who would like to enjoy a story of other’s struggles.…

Story telling about a person’s life can be a good way to illustrate a point, a technique which has been used throughout human history. Authors such as Judith Ortiz Cofer, in her essay The myth of the Latin woman: I just met a girl named Maria, and David Sedaris in his essay I Like Guys, use narrative to argue their thesis, however this is not limited only to established authors. With the pair of essays written by Cofer and Sedaris (and a little story of my own) a reader can see how the use of narration describing events in an author’s life can be used to argue a point.…

Thomas Hardy believes that stories are written to tell an account of an important event whether it is personal or secular. He states that we look to books to find something greater than ourselves, we seek knowledge. If there is anything that is in the least bit more extraordinary than our own mediocre lives, we seek it. If a story does not include any unique phenomena it is considered unnecessary. “A story must be exceptional enough to justify its telling; it must have something more unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and woman.” I support this statement given the fact that most people read and listen to stories that have certain remarkable element for their own pleasure.…

The definition of an anecdote is a story that is very short that either explains or emphasizes a point that is trying to be made. In my speech when I was explaining that soccer has affected the paths that my life has taken including schools and friends, I used the short story of getting recruited for soccer at the high school and collegiate level, which is also where I met my best friends. In Bekah Diehl’s speech making the point that the saying “the only fear is fear itself” she said she not scared of the fear of baseballs, but rather the ball itself. The story she used was with her friends playing catch with the baseball around her.…

2.Tan uses anecdotes to give a clear example of her situation and feelings. This can relate to readers lives as well as demonstrate a point of frustration in Tan's life. The impact of omitting one of these anecdotes would be to take away from the story because it would take away from different emotions. For example, taking away the CAT scan story would not show the seriousness of the effects of the mother's broken English. If the SAT story was taken out, it would not show how Tan's mother's broken English affected Tan.…
