Carpe Diem Speech
To be young is everyone’s dream, everyone wants to stay young forever, but unfortunately it is not possible. That is why the Romans came up with the phrase “Carpe Diem” which means “take advantage of the moment”. Ever since I heard it when I was 14, I knew I had to live by this phrase, I knew there was no alternative, I knew that I had only one shot at life and I had to live each moment like it was the last . No one likes being alone all the time, we all need company and we all like meeting people and learning new things. These are some of the best ways we can enjoy life and all that it throws at us. What better way to meet people than going abroad to study? I tell you, there is no better way. Why do I say that you might ask? Well it’s simple, …show more content…
It started with the first VCR cassette tape my father ever bought: rock and roll band Queen’s “Greatest Flix”. I fell in love with the music and the language even though I did not understand it then, since I was only 1 and a half years old. Later on I decided I wanted to know what Freddie Mercury sang about and I went on to study English for a whole 13 years. That is how I got to the level I am at today. Apart from English, I have studied Spanish 11 years, 8 in Romania and 3 in Spain. Spain provided the area of study which I majored in at my high-school so when I graduated they gave me the chance to a unique scholarship to come and study here. Of course I took the shot and came here, in Granada, where I currently live, knowing not even 1% of what lay ahead. Granada is the most important European destination for exchange students all over the world, this is a known fact. I got to meet dozens of friends here, I got to live unforgettable experiences, know unique things about their culture and their habits, what they like to eat, what they like to drink, how they like to do things and how they live their …show more content…
You might say oh well this is quite boring actually but you have not let me reach my point, which is to show everybody how I got to live those priceless moments : it was by learning and studying foreign languages, the only way to connect with people around the world. How else could you flatter a person more, than by speaking his or her mother tongue, and above all else, speak it

In “Mother Tongue” (1990) an essay written by Amy Tan, a Chinese-American author who has written a lot of beautiful novels, Tan argues that all languages have a purpose and value. At the beginning of my French classes, my thoughts were that it was going to be hard but it wasn't. My Spanish knowledge helped me gain control of the language quicker. It was challenging, but nothing I couldn’t overcome. Whenever I needed help, I would ask my French teacher or classmates for clarification on what I was struggling with. In other words, I love learning and every little thing that I learn becomes part of who I am. Learning French was an amazing opportunity that my school gave me. This relates to the person that I am because, I love interacting with people and learning things from them, for example their likes and dislikes, where they come from, and getting to know the variety of people that live on this planet because we are all human but we aren't the same. We are all different in our own little ways, so being able to speak with other people who speak English or Spanish or French in my opinion is an enormous…

While there is no federal law involving assisted suicide in the U.S, the act is legal in five states. Some people like to believe that they are helping their terminally or mentally ill family member or friend when it comes to this act, but are they really? At that moment I felt that my endeavors during school paid off, because this preparation helped me pass the TOEFL and SAT exams with high scores rather effortlessly, and I was elated when I discovered my scores were above average. In order to pass these exams, I had to be literate in English because I had to write essays, fix some sentences with grammatical issues and comprehend articles in English. The tough work of taking English classes simultaneously with Spanish and chess classes helped me prepare for these critical moments that decided where I would spend my future. These exams helped me obtain half a scholarship with the chess program. Furthermore, being good with computers, especially in computer programming, gave me an opportunity to receive the other half a scholarship to obtain a full scholarship to stay here in the United States and attend…
