Carnatic Dance Ethnography
When I am not attending school or participating in any school clubs, working on school assignments, doing chores at home, or earning money, I enjoy volunteering, reading, dancing at the studio, singing Carnatic music, and doing taekwondo.
To elaborate, I volunteer through many clubs and organizations at various places. Usually on weekends, I volunteer at the St. Johns Hospital. Through National Honor Society, for which I serve as president, Key Club, Club Scrubs and the Interact Rotary International club, I have volunteered at the food bank, many school events, and at nursing homes. Additionally, I spend about an hour a day just reading my favorite book at the moment.
At least once a week I go to the studio and dance. I dance an ancient Indian classical art form called Bharatanatyam, hip hop, and also various Bollywood styles. Specifically, Bharatanatyam is my favorite and closest to my heart. This is the activity I like the best and there are so many reasons pertaining to why this is so. I started this ancient and difficult dance form at the age of five and at the age of eleven, after six years of hard work, completed my Arangetram, the Indian dance graduation which is a milestone in a person’s life and as big

This vocal expression is ancient and has bonded me to my culture and roots. Every week, at least twice, I attend taekwondo classes and this year I attained my black belt. I reached a big milestone after four years of hard work and constant participation and successes at tournaments. One of my biggest accomplishments from taekwondo occurred when I placed first in the Dallas Taekwondo International tournament, my first tournament, which I did not expect. This moment was huge and gave me hope and motivation for this sport. I also enjoy participating in Student Council as a

The second organization that I had the opportunity to volunteer for is Goodwill Rescue mission. They created this organization in 1896. Under the leadership of Rev. Lawrence Sutherland, the purpose of the organization moved from being a struggling institution to one with a nationwide reputation. They shared the love of God in Christ by providing food, shelter, spiritual guidance and instruction for the poor and the homeless in Newark. According to Goodwill Rescue mission, they affiliate with helping the individuals directly rather than send them someplace else to fend for themselves. The program is also working with some of these individuals to get them back on their feet to fend for themselves. They have to go through programs if any of them…

Each year in November I volunteer at The Basket Brigade. We assemble boxes full of food for the less fortunate to have for Thanksgiving/the holiday season. After assembling the boxes we each take 4-5 and deliver them to anyone who has requested them. This opportunity is very eye opening, it shows you how much a little kindness goes and how thankful people are that you care. I have also volunteered at Feed My Starving Children for the last few years. This organization allows you to help pack food to send to children across the…

Have you had any volunteer experiences and, if so, what did you like about participating? Give at least one example of what you liked. I have volunteered with Canterbury United Methodist Church on a mission trip and the Birmingham Zoo. When I volunteered with Canterbury, we went on a mission trip to Asheville, North Carolina for a week during the summer. I had the opportunity to travel to another city, in a different state, to help those who are less fortunate and live in harsh conditions. Seeing the harsh conditions that some people live in was very eye-opening for me because it really made me realize how fortunate, not only I, but the rest of my community is. I loved helping the people in Asheville because I knew that it is something they…

Joining the lion dance team was a major turning point in my life. Through lion dancing, I was able to express myself without anyone knowing who I was. The lion head is a way for me to hide my identity, but my vehemence in dancing is from the motivation my family members’ criticism gave me, which made me want to do better. Because of the love and support I received from the lion dance team, I am more open-minded about the world. It allowed me to overcome my shyness and instilled me with the confidence and happiness I have…

I have been in many discourse communities where member share their ideas and what they have learned. Once I had a dream to become a professional dancer. I was introduced to dancing when I was six years of age, and I fell in love with dancing ever since. I used to watch Bollywood movies which is known for songs and dances and I was mesmerized by their out of the world choreography. They looked so lively, and it felt like they use the body movements to express the world in a very enticing way. I joined the dance class during my freshmen year thinking all I will have to learn is movements like Bollywood dances from the teacher. Although, high school dance was more like learning the movement terms in words, bringing it to real life in action and most of the time performing. For that to happen, I needed to be in a good shape with my classmates so I can receive their help but it was not like that in this case. Being an immigrant from Nepal with limited English was challenging…
