Week 5 Critical Thinking Questions
1. If economic conditions require you to accept a job that is not exactly what you are aiming for, how can you best approach the new job? What are the benefits of doing so?
I try to do everything to my best ability. Most people have to go through a few jobs they didn’t want or didn’t particularly care for to get to where they wanted to be. Many top executives recall a time where they had to work at fast food restaurants to pay the bills. By accepting the job you are able to maintain your work history to avoid gaps also keep an income coming in. You may be able to come across some useful contacts as well.
2. Is it more advantageous for the applicant or the interviewer to bring up the salary first? Why or why not?
I believe that it is more advantageous for the applicant to let the interviewer bring up the salary. The applicant can seem to be only concerned with the money and not the actual job. This can turn the employee’s view negative and help you miss the opportunity. If the interviewer approaches the subject first then you have a better chance and can answer the questions while learning useful information.
3. What is an appropriate response when an interviewer asks what salary you are looking for?
Before the interview, I would have already researched online and with others in the company about the salary average for the position. My answer would be a range based on the information I found. You don’t want to sell yourself short or shoot way too high.
4. Base your answers to the following questions on your salary research: (a) What is the entry-level salary for the job you are seeking? (b) What salary range do you plan to seek in your job search? What is this range based on?
I plan on seeking jobs that offer a salary range of $45,000 to $50000. I choose this range because it is the entry-level range for someone in my major. I will be completing many certifications before my job search to try to stand out and hopefully get
