Career Killers By David Givot
I’ve learned a lot throughout PAR 205 so far, but when these parts have really stuck out to me because they could ultimately be “career killers”. I really enjoyed when our guest speaker who was a paralegal came in and gave a fantastic presentation on how the process works once we’ve “been served.” She also talked how we need to act and what we should do after the fact. While writing this paper, several articles stuck out, such as the one used above from EMS World, but how David Givot describes negligence, the consequences thereof, and how to prevent it was easy to grasp and very beneficial. He breaks down each individual part and expands on it. “While a negligent act can certainly carry a devastating cost, understanding negligence and

Gerald Posner’s Killing the Dream begins with a detailed description of Martin Luther King Jr.’s final days and the detailed movements of his killer. The author arranges his book into three pivotal sections: The Assassination, The Assassin, and the Search for the Truth. He begins the book with a detailed account of the events that caused King to even be in Memphis, the chaos surrounding the Memphis Sanitation Strike. The Memphis Sanitation strike began on February 12, 1968, because of poor treatment, dangerous working conditions, and the deaths of Echol Cole and Robert Walker, 1300 black sanitation workers walked off the job. At the time of Cole and Walker’s deaths, city rules forbade black employees from seeking shelter anywhere else but the…

The HIM professional can have a direct impact on the quality or compliance of specific operations or employees within a healthcare institution. Healthcare institutions, such as hospitals, can be huge institutions made up of hundreds or even thousands of treatment or operation specific areas operation. This can include anything from the surgeon who performs coronary artery bypass to the neonatal intensive care nurse who directly cares for struggling newborns to the physical plant worker who makes sure all the lights in the building stay on and the operating room is maintained at a certain temperature. As an overall institution the thought of identifying risk and liability within the organization can be quite overwhelming and daunting. The best way to approach this is to break things down into specific issues or areas and focus on one thing at a time, with the overall goal to be improving quality and reducing risk to the institution. This paper will focus on three specific scenarios that represent an area of risk and liability for the institution. These three scenarios will include the safety of blood transfusions within a hospital, dealing with power failure risks within a hospital and using operational checklists to improve employee efficiency, consistency and reducing the human factor of making mistakes.…

In his novel, Eaters of the Dead, author Michael Crichton shows how the Volga Northmen were able to defeat their foes, the wendol, by using their intellect instead of their weapons. This is seen in four aspects. The theme of the novel is that physical courage is not enough to preserve your culture and lifestyle: intelligence and superior knowledge are absolutely essential. Conflict between the wendol and the Northmen shows which group has the intelligence to eliminate the other. Symbolism of wisdom, knowledge, and the lack of such things are used by Crichton to illustrate this moral. The juxtaposition of characters emphasizes the cleverness of the Volga Northmen compared to the Venden Northmen.…

In A Time to Kill, a little African American girl is abducted, raped, and murdered by two white supremacist men. After her father discovers that the criminals will likely walk away freely due to racism in the South, he decides to take things into his own hands. Carl Lee Hailey kills the two men who wronged his daughter, and expects to be incarcerated for his crime. His lawyer, Jake Brigance, delivers an amazing closing speech at Hailey’s trial. Although the jury believes that Hailey is guilty, Brigance uses ethics as a last resort. Brigance asks the all-white jury to close their eyes as he tells a story. He then tells the story of “a little girl” who was abducted on her way home from the grocery store. Using brutal and specific details to…

"A young college student named Ben is hired to act as a seven-day guide for a “big wig” executive named Madec who is hunting for Bighorn sheep in a remote region of the desert. Ben knows the area well having grown up locally with his uncle learning to hunt and camp in the wilderness. On the third day out, a terrible accident occurs when Madec shoots at what he thinks is a ram but turns out to be an old hermit. Madec wants them both to lie to the authorities and leave the dead man in the desert. Ben insists on taking the body back to civilization, despite offers of hush money to remain silent. The desperate man will do anything to avoid the potential publicity and jail time that may result from the investigation, including forcing Ben to strip and wander in the brutal heat without food, water, or clothing. Ben tries to outwit Madec but the city slicker doesn't leave anything to chance, removing the clothing from the dead man as well as any provisions from his makeshift camp. Ben is lucky to find a slingshot and a dozen or so lead shot hidden in the camp…

“I hate my job!” It is a statement that has been heard forever and one that will most likely be heard in the future. Nearly 70% of United States workers dislike their jobs (Gallup poll). Many American workers believe they need to work for the money. Not to contribute to society. The article “Take This Job and Shove It” greatly emphasizes this point and explains the uselessness of “Nickel and dime jobs.” The purpose of parallelism in Theodore Roszak’s article “Take This Job and Shove It” is to help convince the audience that the amount of jobs there are today are not necessary and most are not useful.…

For example, consider a nurse administrator who makes a severe medication dose mistake. If one of the reasons leading the nurse to make the error is that she is working a third shift, or has a heavy patient load, or is not ineffectively trained, whose responsibility is that? Health care management needs to efficiently manage for all patient safety just as they manage for efficacy and profit maximization. Continuous nonmalficence and beneficent safety must become part of what a health care organization prides itself on.…
