The majority of university students have no plan for the future other than to finish gain their degree. A failure to plan can result in a great deal of frustration in the future in finding that satisfying and challenging career. In order to compete with other graduates this can lead to falsifying credentials to meet the qualifications in the job market as job seekers begin to despair of finding work. Having a three to five year resume can assist job seekers to avoid these types of dilemmas and strategically prepare them for meeting career-planning objectives. By creating a longer-term plan that can be modified, gainful employment opportunities will cease to be a concern. In looking at this process consider strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats analysis (SWOT) to gain insight into areas of career confidence and other areas where additional training may be needed. By self-evaluation, questions, getting constructive feedback, a career plan can be formulated that will position the student for greater success. The SWOT analysis is primarily a business tool used to study an organization’s internal and external benefits and struggles in order to strategize a plan for resolution. Consider the following structure in discovering internal and external qualities that enhance employability as well as areas that can be improved (Hansen & Hansen, 2009). Questions to consider in building a SWOT analysis career plan:

Strengths
To start a personal SWOT analyses consider the following questions about the present. What are the internal strengths brought to the table in the field of interest? Who can be called upon to provide letters of recommendation or solid affirming references? When was the resume updated?

What type of experience in the field of choice is a strength? Weaknesses
What are the internal weaknesses in the field of interest?
Could this be strengthened by reading more on the subject, researching the topic, or a taking a course?
Can experience be gained by requesting a special project from current employer? Opportunities
What are some of the external opportunities for career growth that are available? How about an internship, mentor, or tutoring, traveling abroad? Would volunteering services to an organization or club benefit the career? What type of career associations or societies exists in the field of choice? Threats

What are external threats, competition of other students?
Lack of confidence, experience?
How can these areas be built up? Through Toastmasters, Counseling, volunteering, training? In answering SWOT questions
Some answers to the questions above that are internal characteristics based on experiences that will assist in career planning for strengths are: Employment experience
Previous training and education
Technological experience with the Internet
IT experience with software and hardware
Business skills such as marketing, accounting
Social skills such as communication, leadership abilities, presentation skills Personal character self starter, work well in groups or alone, able to handle deadlines, energetic, people person Finding ways to identify Weaknesses

Personal characteristics that will require more concentrated effort to improve. Little or no employment experience
Poor grades
Unclear on plans for the future
Still searching for career
Lots of education but no specific career track has been discovered that is interesting and exciting Lacking technical skills
Need to improve in areas of communication, leadership, and teamwork Inexperienced in job searching
Lack of motivation or discipline
Personal characteristics of indecision, timidity, impulsiveness How Can we Recognize Opportunities
