Care Value-Based Principles
Part A
Discuss how three principles of the care value base may be applied by staff in their work and how this impacts positively on service users.
Promote service users’ rights and choices
Service users have a right to dignity and freedom from discrimination. They should be treated with respect and that their feelings are considered in the care they receive. Service users should be empowered by being given choices and encouraged to make their own decisions.
In the care setting a service user was being visited by her husband for their wedding anniversary. They had a special dinner planned in her room and the service user had requested not to be interrupted while he was there. The care worker respected the service user’s choice by placing

The nursing home allocated a key care worker for the service user and she spoke with the relatives and service user about her new room and was there any way they could personalise it for her. The care worker was able to discuss the service user’s likes and dislikes and found out that she was a great lover of family photos and had a few personal belongings of great sentimental value. The care worker arranged for the service users belongings to be delivered to the nursing home prior to her admission and was able to set out the photos and personal belongings with the help of relatives in a way that the service user could see them no matter where they were in the room or in bed. By doing this and listening to the service user and the relatives, the care worker has adapted to the needs of the individual in order to help them settle. He required help to get around. The care worker advised the service user it was lunchtime and did he want help to get to the dining room. The service user advised he was not hungry and asked what was for dinner. The care worker checked the menu and advised the service user what was available. The service user chose what he wanted for dinner but asked if he could have it without an item he disliked. The care worker asked the service user why he disliked this item so much and the service user gave his reply. The care worker acknowledged his choice and asked if he would like to go the dining room for his lunch or wait till later. The service user decided to go for his lunch as he wanted to read the paper later. In this interaction the care worker empowered the service user by letting him choose whether he wanted to go for his lunch or not and the service user’s questions were answered with respect and the care worker is not taking control over the service user. The care worker has provided a choice for the service user and listened to the service

    REFLECTIVE ACCOUNT I started my shift at 7:15 am. My work clothes are comfortable and unrestrictive; my footwear is flat, sensible and offers protection to my feet and ankles. When I arrive to the service user’s home, I knock on the door and wait to be let in either by one of the service user’s or by a work colleague. Once inside I greet the service user, if they are awake. I then head to the sleep in room, to start verbal handover with my work colleague. I encourage them to start their personal care. After, I ask them if they need any support with getting dressed and preparing breakast. The time is now 8:00 so I administrer the morning medication. I always wash my hands before handling food or medication and after assisting with any personal care. After the service user has had their breakfast. I support them with the washing up. I will then encourage the service user to clean their property. I will then support the indiviual in safely cleaning, all ares with correct products. After this I consult with the service user, about their activity plan for the day, if the service user decided to go into town. I ask them how they would prefer to travel, by bus or by personal car.…

These rights give individuals to the freedom of expression of thought and to have a private life, protection and safety from torture, slavery, abuse, unfair treatment, dignity, access information about themselves and to be able to use a preferred method of communication and language. Health and care workers have many responsibilities to make sure that they take good care and the right care values for their patients and service users. They need to be polite, caring, considerable and patient with them. Each patient and service user has a different need, want, preferences and expectations, they need to be able to recognise this. They also should be able to recognise what the user or patient is able to do, and should always encourage them to make choices in their lives so they are still in control of themselves so they will feel good. This not only makes the user/patient feel good about them but also helps support the service user's rights to be cared in the way they need to be.     Poor environment can cause barriers to communication and cause many issues when trying to speak to someone. Insufficient seating can be a problem if a care worker needed to sit down with a service user face to face. The issue may be that there may not be enough chairs, they might be positioned wrong and there is no room to move them or having to sit side by side. This can be overcome by relocating to a different room with adequate seating arrangements, checking the room situation beforehand and if there isn’t another room, rearranging to speak at a later time or date.     The benefits of regarding positive and effective communication For the service user to feel welcomed and valued, in a health and social care setting, in a hospital, there could be a conversation flowing between a newly trained nurse and a head leader. For example, it could be a nurse’s first day at the work environment. She and the head leader would be talking orally, through speech. Also, if the service provider (head leader), shows non – verbal interpersonal interactions by having a warm and welcoming posture, in this way the nurse will feel comfortable too. After that, the message is decoded and the child thinks to himself, ‘is this the care worker just being nice or are they trying to hurt me?’ Finally the ‘message is understood’ and the child understands that the care worker is just hugging them for comfort, and stops crying.…
