Car Crash While Hitchhiking
In the story “Car Crash While Hitchhiking” by Denis Johnson wrote the story talking about a man who is a drug addict who soon recovers from the addiction after a car crash. The drug addict is also the narrator in the story and claims to be able to see the future, the story jumps from time to time talking about different days. When reading the story I found 2 themes in the story; death and love. The main characters in the story were the drug addict and the married man. This story was very interesting to read but at the end it gets a bit confusing. At the beginning of the story the narrator is trying to hitchhike to find a warm and dry spot to rest. He then gets 3 rides from a salesman, an Indian, and a college student all who drugged him. As the story goes on the man gets a ride from a man and his family who all were nice to let a stranger who was just drugged in their car. The narrator and the man become close with each other because the man showed the narrator his mistress that he loved and he told him that he also loved his wife and family, and knew that he wouldn’t say anything.
As the men get back in the car they get back on the road and soon enough the man gets in a car accident. While the accident is going on the narrator has his eyes closed but he can still see everything that is going on. After the great impact on the family the man believes his wife is dead because she is not responding, yet the narrator knows that she is not. When they are at the hospital the narrator hears that the man in the car is the one that died and his family still lives. Years go by after the accident and the narrator is living in a hospital fully recovered from drugs.
The setting in the story was very dark, whenever the narrator would say how the weather looked it was always dark and gloomy, no sun. The beginning of the story it was raining and as the story goes there is no sign of sun. The main character is the drug addict he seemed to be a
