Captain Metaphors
I thought the poem was an excellent poem to demonstrate how important other people can be in your life. The way Walt Whitman worded the poem it brings to life this statement, " Exult O shores, and ring O bells! But I with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead." I believe this to be the strongest point to what I said. It shows just how much the man cared for and loved his captain, he didn't celebrate with the others, he didn't rejoice, he only mourned the loss of his captain. There were many excellent literary devices that I found very meaningful to the poem, especially the extended metaphor of the captain being the man's father. I found that to be very simple to understand and see, but at the same time genius because

Although there were things in this poem I really liked, there are also some things that I didn't like as much. Such as the amount of metaphors and personification he was using. I found it difficult to analyze the poem with this because it was hard to tell what Mckay was actually trying to say. It does make the poem a lot more readable with these things put in the poem, but I just have a hard time trying to understand what the meaning of it actually is.…

This poem is a poem that describes the life of a retired miner, how he faced the close encounter of death and lived through that experience to have a long fulfilling life. In my opinion this poem is a poem of a young aussie man who was born poor and wanted better for his family in the future, he wanted his grand kids to be wealthy and not fight for survival day by day as he did.…

One of the most credited poets throughout the Civil War period was Walt Whitman, who wrote about the hardships of war in his work. In particular, two of his poems are not only heavily intertwined based on topic, but in structure and used literary techniques. “Beat! Beat! Drums!” and “O Captain! O Captain!” both share many similar qualities among figurative, sound and structural devices that Whitman uses to help further enhance the theme of how negatively war can impact individuals.…

“O Captain! My Captain!” is a poem written by Walt Whitman. Whitman wrote the poem to honor Abraham Lincoln after his assassination in 1865 and describes him as a captain sailing his ship. The “ship” is the divided United States, and it is enduring a “storm”, which is the American Civil War. Lincoln eventually brought the Union and Confederate States back into one nation. Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery and reunited the country but was seemingly destined to die afterward.…

Although when it comes to the death or the upcoming death of his father, you see this whole demeanor change, the way he writes shows a more frantic and fragile state. It is almost as if he is begging and pleading for his father to fight death, not to give up, and to continue living, not just for himself but for him as well because he is on the verge of tears. When I look at how other people look at the poem's theme and read how others have analyzed it, they pick up on the same thing but have slightly different reactions. The way Andrew Walker wrote his analysis seemed to have the same analysis when discovering the theme. However, he interpreted it differently, where the theme was somber and aggressive to me, but to Walker, it was more aggressive rather than a good mix of both.…

Whitman's poem is very cheerful. I get this impression by the statement "singing with open mouths their song of melodious songs". To me, he is expressing the happiness of each worker and is showing the audience that the workers are in good spirits. I also believe his poem is very playful. He makes it clear that the poem is meant to give off good vibes and is showing the workers being content with themselves as well as with their placement in America. Another impression I get by Whitman's poem is that it is meant to be joyous. the reason I believe this is because he continue sly points out that each worker is "singing" and usually singing is a way of showing joy. I also believe Whitman is being intimate with his words and with the way he portrays each worker. The statement "Each singing…

The shift in images from the beginning to the ending of the poem served as a useful example in showing me how to switch the tone of a poem with grace (I was thinking about my condom poem in this instance) and how to structure lines and words in a way that make the reader think. All in all, Brewington hits the nail on the head with this poem by delivering a prepossessing story of life, death, and all the odd portions…

By reading just the title I think the poem is going to be about someone dying. I say that because of the words eulogy and veteran. The line “do not stand at my grave and weep” means don’t visit his grave and be sad. The line “I am not there, I do not sleep” means that they aren’t there; they’re not going to show up. The line “I am a thousand winds that blow” is a metaphor which is used to give feeling to the poem meaning that he’s there for his family; that he wants his family to think about him every time they feel the wind blow. The line “I am the diamond glint of snow” is also a metaphor meaning he wants his family to think of him when they see the new, shiny snow of winter. “I am the sunlight on ripened grain” is a metaphor meaning he is warmth and golden. “I am the gentle autumn rain” is also a metaphor but it means that he’s gentle and he’s there when it’s raining. “When you awaken in the mornings hush” is a reminder to the family from the veteran. “I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight” is a metaphor telling his family to think of him when they feel that uplifting rush. “I am the soft stars that shine at night” is a metaphor reminding his family to think of him when they see the stars shining at night. “I am not there, I DID NOT DIE” means that even though he’s not on earth anymore he plans to remind his family that he loves them through the little things he’s mentioned throughout the poem. I think the attitude of this poem is…

This poem is telling a touching story of the decision to dismantle the Constitution. However, to truly understand this poem you must first learn background on the Constitution. The Constitution was a wooden ship, and heavy frigate of navy named after the written Constitution. The Constitution is famous for defeating five British ships in the war of 1812. This ship served as a symbol of peace and independence for the American people. While reading the poem you can infer that the speaker of the poem is an individual that was once aboard ship. Throughout this piece the tone of this poem shifts from admiration to angry near the end. This is established by the line twenty, “And there should be her grave”. This line was written to represent that the disagreement he had with the ship getting dismantle and rather would have it be damaged at sea.…

The next element that I enjoyed from this poem is the tone that the author uses. I think there are two different tones that she is portraying, a sad tone and a stern tone. At the beginning when she is talking about the man holding is dead wife in his arms the tone seems sad. Then it changes when she is talking about the love and chivalry he is showing as well. I imagine her talking about the man’s courage in a very stern tone of voice.…

Whitman makes a connection to something larger than himself of how the past and the future mirror each other. Every event around him is seen by him as "glories". While people appear to make the same crossing as him and see the same things, ( like the sunset and the tides ) they take it for granted that these things will exist even in a hundred years. This poem reminds us to reflect and appreciate what is around us. Our memories begin with the etchings of our experience. Whitman's poem slows the frames in our life…

The mood of this poem is thoroughly melancholic, depressing, mirthless and sombre. Various words present in the poem convey this mood to us, by using various poetic techniques, namely dictation. “Had died and left their weary work undone”. This presents the sea as being listless, dull and lonely. The word “died” really emphasizes on this. Various words used throughout the poem reiterate this melancholy and sombreness; “Miserable, Lone”. “The slow, wet, melancholy bleating ships” The words “Slow, wet and Melancholy” really emphasize on the depressing factor of the atmosphere created in this poem. The rhyme scheme of this poem is irregular, usually rhyming every alternate line- Eg. ABAB..., though sometimes this rule doesn’t apply. There is one couplet present in it too. This particular rhyme scheme has the added effect of emphasis. It makes the poem feel very focused and sharp, For example, Lines Fifteen and Sixteen are a pair of couplets. They are the ONLY pair of couplets present in the poem, and so they are especially emphasized (their meaning and significance), as they stand out, like a sore thumb. This irregular rhyme scheme is somewhat chaotic, corresponding to the chaos on the poem. The rhyme scheme creates a unique, yet appropriate effect. There are a variety of poetic devices present in this poem;…

The feelings that come across the man in this poem are unbearable. He feels as if the hardship is getting worse and worse as he drifts through the cold winter. The author portrays images such as “My feet were cast / In icy bands / bound with frost, / with frozen chains…” (8-10). This quote is showing that the harsh conditions are painful, but he still keeps up with them. “No man sheltered / On the quiet fairness of earth can feel / How wretched I was…” (13-14). The seafarer feels as if someone hasn’t experienced this life, they don’t know how hard it is being stuck at sea without being able to go back. He overcame these feelings for the weather each and every time for his passion at sea. “I put myself back on the paths of the sea.” (30), “The time for journeys would come and my soul / Called me eagerly out.”(36-37). You can clearly see that his mind and soul are set on something and always put it back in place. The words “I put myself back” and “eagerly” convey that nothing is stopping his journey along the sea.…
