Captain Metaphors
I thought the poem was an excellent poem to demonstrate how important other people can be in your life. The way Walt Whitman worded the poem it brings to life this statement, " Exult O shores, and ring O bells! But I with mournful tread, Walk the deck my Captain lies, Fallen cold and dead." I believe this to be the strongest point to what I said. It shows just how much the man cared for and loved his captain, he didn't celebrate with the others, he didn't rejoice, he only mourned the loss of his captain. There were many excellent literary devices that I found very meaningful to the poem, especially the extended metaphor of the captain being the man's father.     By reading just the title I think the poem is going to be about someone dying. I say that because of the words eulogy and veteran. The line “do not stand at my grave and weep” means don’t visit his grave and be sad. The line “I am not there, I do not sleep” means that they aren’t there; they’re not going to show up. The line “I am a thousand winds that blow” is a metaphor which is used to give feeling to the poem meaning that he’s there for his family; that he wants his family to think about him every time they feel the wind blow. The line “I am the diamond glint of snow” is also a metaphor meaning he wants his family to think of him when they see the new, shiny snow of winter. “I am the sunlight on ripened grain” is a metaphor meaning he is warmth and golden. “I am the gentle autumn rain” is also a metaphor but it means that he’s gentle and he’s there when it’s raining. “When you awaken in the mornings hush” is a reminder to the family from the veteran. “I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight” is a metaphor telling his family to think of him when they feel that uplifting rush. “I am the soft stars that shine at night” is a metaphor reminding his family to think of him when they see the stars shining at night. “I am not there, I DID NOT DIE” means that even though he’s not on earth anymore he plans to remind his family that he loves them through the little things he’s mentioned throughout the poem.     The mood of this poem is thoroughly melancholic, depressing, mirthless and sombre. Various words present in the poem convey this mood to us, by using various poetic techniques, namely dictation. “Had died and left their weary work undone”. This presents the sea as being listless, dull and lonely. The word “died” really emphasizes on this. Various words used throughout the poem reiterate this melancholy and sombreness; “Miserable, Lone”. “The slow, wet, melancholy bleating ships” The words “Slow, wet and Melancholy” really emphasize on the depressing factor of the atmosphere created in this poem. The rhyme scheme of this poem is irregular, usually rhyming every alternate line- Eg. ABAB..., though sometimes this rule doesn’t apply. There is one couplet present in it too. This particular rhyme scheme has the added effect of emphasis. It makes the poem feel very focused and sharp, For example, Lines Fifteen and Sixteen are a pair of couplets. They are the ONLY pair of couplets present in the poem, and so they are especially emphasized (their meaning and significance), as they stand out, like a sore thumb.     The feelings that come across the man in this poem are unbearable. He feels as if the hardship is getting worse and worse as he drifts through the cold winter. The author portrays images such as “My feet were cast / In icy bands / bound with frost, / with frozen chains…” (8-10).
