Captain Corelli's Mandolin
One of the last major events of the novel “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” is the massacre of the Italian troops by the Nazis in the September of 1943. Whilst the Acqui Division was able to delay their capture, they were eventually overpowered and brought to the back of a brothel to be executed. Every man in the barraged was shot to death except one. At the last moment, Carlo stepped in front of Captain Corelli and used his enormous body to shield his friend from the fire. His thick frame was able to slow the bullets enough so that when they passed through the giant man and into the Captain, the wounds created were only superficial. While his actions are not entirely sacrificial seeing as he would have been enviable been killed, they represent

Andrew Manze, an English violinist, and Joseph Szigeti, an American violinist are both internationally renowned for their Baroque playing1. I am going to take a look at each of their recordings of Corelli's La Follia, the difference being however, that they are playing from separate scores and interpretations of the piece. Manze's recording has been done from an earlier, more original copy of the score (I will call it score 1), with few written musical directions. Szigeti's recording is performed using the same piece, however it has been edited by Leonard and Sauret (score 2) to include many musical directions and rearranged movements. Manze's recording was done in 2002 and Szigeti's in 1940. La Follia consists of a variety of different sections; Corelli will jump from warm adagios to fast and exciting vivace sections, this exciting and beautiful style of writing meant his sonatas provided a basis for composers to follow for another half a century.…

In William Faulkner’s quote he states, “He (man) is immortal, not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice, but because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance.” which is true due to the fact that it is seen through the thoughts that are expressed by the characters Pelagia, Captain Corelli, and Carlo in Louis De Bernieres’ Corelli’s Mandolin. Pelagia is a young and intelligent Greek women who finds herself unwillingly falling in love with a charming Italian soldier named Captain Antonio Corelli and Carlo Piero Guercio, a fairly large but loving artilleryman for Captain Corelli. All of these characters in the novel are full of compassion and endurance and make sacrifices which help them to not only survive the events of World War II but also overcome them.…

Louis Zamperini and Sebastian’s attitude and beliefs were provoked by the others whom they affiliated with and it represented what characteristics both of them held within. Primarily, Sebastian made the decision to associate with Antonio and it evoked the contradictory beliefs that were within Sebastian. “I am more serious than my custom. You must be so too if heed me, which to do trebles thee o’er.” (II.i.185-187) Sebastian developed the urge to murder his own brother because of his initial decision to accompany Antonio and that displayed how disloyal and rebellious Sebastian truly was. Moreover, during the timeframe of the holocaust, Louis Zamperini faced excruciating pain and torture from the captors who had held him captive in Japan, but the other American captives were able to sustain his mental stability. “Though all three men faced the same hardship, their differing perceptions of it appeared to be shaping their fates. Louie and Phil's hope displaced their fear and inspired them to work toward their survival, and each success renewed their physical and emotional vigor.” (Hillenbrand 155) Louis Zamperini and his companion Phil were able to help each other restore the prosperity and strength that resided in both of them, and it truly portrayed the motivational strength that persisted in both of them. Conclusively, the decision of…

    Romeo and Juleit

In the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare shows the key idea of think with your head, not with your heart. This idea is still relevant today as people today usually think with their heart without thinking with their head first. In the play when Romeo meets Juliet at the Capulets ball, the idea of think with your head, not with your heart is still relevant today. Romeo said when he sees the beauty of Juliet, Did my heart love til now Forswear its sight. For I never saw true beauty til this night. I know Romeo is now thinking with his heart now because a minute ago he was frustrated about Rosaline, but now he forgets everything about Rosaline and fall in love with Juliet. Later on, Romeo soon finds out that Juliet is Capulet. He says Is she a Capulet My life is my foes debt. This shows me how stupid Romeo is because if he uses his head to think about the identity of Juliet, both of them can avoid this star-crossed love. I think Shakespeare wrote this to warn his audience think with your head, not with your heart as well as making his audience excited. This actually worked for me because though I knew this scene makes Romeo look foolish, I felt excited about what is going on next. The idea of think with your head, not with your heart is still relevant today as many people today fall in love quickly with each other by just looking at the profile picture on facebook, which is a really bad idea as they know nothing about each other but only a picture. Not like the freedom society we live in now, actually it was not always possible for a girl and a boy fall in love with each other so quickly and get married during middle century as parents usually have the complete authority over their children. So the audiences would probably felt jealous about the love between Romeo and Juliet as most of their marriages were arranged by their parents but not themselves. When Romeo slews Tybalt for Mercutios revenge, the idea of think with your head, not…

The captain of the youth's company had been killed in an early part of the action. His body lay stretched out in the position of a tired man resting, but upon his face there was an astonished and sorrowful look, as if he thought some friend had done him an ill turn. The babbling man was grazed by a shot that made the blood stream widely down his face. He clapped both hands to his head. “Oh!" he said, and ran. Another grunted suddenly as if a club had struck him in the stomach.(Red Badge of Courage 67).…

Fellow soldiers, army members, citizens of Venice, and most humble duke, I believe we are all united here today for we all shared unique experiences and relationships with Othello that held meaning for us. He was a man who had an impact on us all, and though I shared a close friendship with Othello, that was merely my own experience, and I cannot imagine the effect his absence has had on the rest of you. Let us support one another with the same support Othello presented us and ensure we continue his morality through our own actions. Rest in peace, virtuous…

Long before I had an iPhone of my own I would spend long car rides listening to music on my mom's iPod. Her music might have been a little old, but I didn't really mind. Most of the songs passed by in a blur of 80's synth or soulful guitar, however, there was one song that caught my attention every time, Billy Joel's "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant". Growing up on Long Island I'd always been a fan, but at such a young age I could never fully grasp what most of his songs were about. Instead, every time it would come on I would just dance around snapping my fingers to the beat, not a care in the world. But, like "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" is about growing up and facing reality, I had to grow up too. At first, I thought the song was…

When the men are supposed to bomb Ferrara and Yossarian moves the bomb line so it appears as if the men have already bombed it, the lack of communication leads the men to believe that it actually has been bombed. No one claims full responsibility for the bombing, so no one can disprove its having taken place. Since the men feel very removed from the object of winning the war and accomplishing important goals in that pursuit, they are very happy about this prank. But such an error can lead to other men dying because they do not receive the support they need. Though this reversal of cause and effect seems comical, it has real consequences that are very serious. Though Heller never describes a bloody scene where men are massacred without this support, the reader can imagine the very real effects of communication breakdowns.…

Another way to show Charlie’s bravery is when he disobeyed a direct order, but he did so in order to protect his comrade, Tommy and also because he knew it was suicidal order ( because of the Germans using equipment, that as soon as they get to the front line they would be killed). Furthermore, Charlie is not given a chance to present his side of the story. Ultimately, the negligence of the chain-of-command resulted in the death of an innocent soldier. But even at the end you may argue he was still showing bravery by not shivering: to show he was week, wanting to see the bullets coming towards him rather than putting the hood on, that the guards persisted he had on (maybe they showing cowardice) Big Joe is a symbol of innocence that Charlie takes comfort in before his pending execution, he thinks about him by singing oranges and lemons before his death rather than pitying himself because he knew he wasn’t a coward regardless to what his sergeant or anyone else had said.…
