Capstone CheckPoint • Locate two Web sites that you feel exhibit exemplary design features and explain why you selected each site. What design features stand out on each site? Are these features unique to the Web sites you selected or are they used by their competitors or similar sites? Are these design features used to be visual appealing or to promote usability? How can usability be determined? • Write a 200- to 300-word response.
One of the first web sites that comes to mind when I think of exemplary design features is the Blizzard website and IGN website. One of the first design features on that website that comes to mind is the easy of finding the information you are looking for. The top menu tabs helps a user find the area of information they need, and the submenus within those tabs helps break down what you need even further. Another great design feature is the coloration and overall appearance of the website. The colors are vibrant, don’t clash, and are easy on the eyes. The lack of large overwhelming blocks of information are also not present. These kinds of designs are used by competitors and other similar sites catering to gamers. I believe that the design features are intended both for visual appearance as well as promoting usability. Usability can be determined by how easy it is for a user to get onto the page, and find the information they need. Both websites have great visual appearances and usability for the user. You don’t have to spend long searching for the information or area of the website you need. It’s straight forward and allows the user to reach the information they need. This in turn helps promote repeated use of the website.
