Capstone Analysis
Cybercrime is an issue that should not be taken lightly. Crimes that are committed online can damage an individual’s life or cause major chaos. This paper will discuss what cybercrime is and how it has contributed to the overall rise in crime rates over the last ten years. This paper will also discuss recommendations to combat cybercrime and crimes associated with cybercrime and hackers, along with how cybercrime will affect the future of the criminal justice system.
A cybercrime is a crime that is committed on a computer. There are several different types of crimes that are considered cybercrimes. A few examples of these crimes are virus spreading, hacking, fraud, and cyber bullying. A large amount of identity theft is committed online, and this has become a huge problem. According to "What Is Cyber Crime?" (2015), “reports of alleged computer crime have been a hot news item of late. Especially alarming is the realization that many of the masterminds behind these criminal acts are mere kids. In fact, children no longer need to be highly skilled in order to execute cybercrimes. "Hacker tools" are easily available on the Net and, once downloaded, can be used by even novice computer users” (para. 3).
Cybercrime has contributed to the overall rise in crime rates over the last ten years in many ways. Individuals who are committed these online crimes are often doing things both online and offline. These crimes often deal with fraud and hacking. If an individual commits fraud, they often make both online and offline purchases. Another way that cybercrime has contributed to the overall rise in crime rates is from so many crimes being committed online. Individuals might commit these crimes online because they feel safer doing so in the privacy of their own home. They might feel that they will not be caught because they are not being seen. This affects the overall rise in crime rates as well.
There are several recommendations that could combat cybercrime and crimes associated with cybercrime and hackers. There needs to be more awareness pertaining to ways for individuals to protect their information online. Many people may feel that being hacked could never happen to them. By raising awareness, individuals might be more cautious. Another recommendation would be for the government to help protect individuals even more by doing more online.
In the future, there will be even more cybercrimes if the individuals who are committing these crimes are not stopped. This will cause even more crime rates and more problems. The criminal justice system will be greatly affected because there will be more individuals being sentenced and put into prisons across the country. It will cause an even greater need for criminal justice workers as well.
Cybercrimes should be taken seriously, and individuals must learn how to protect themselves while online. This paper has discussed what cybercrime is and how cybercrime contributed to the overall rise in crime rates over the last ten years. This paper has also discussed recommendations that could help to combat cybercrime and crimes associated with cybercrime and hackers.
