Cannabis: Law and Medical Marijuana

Cannabis Plant Should Be legalized & Used Medically. Cannabis plant has been proven to be one of the most effective plants on earth when it comes to using it medically. My question here is, why not legalize this precious plant? Lets make a wise use of this. Cannabis is what we all know as marijuana. Even though I personally don’t make use of this plant. I’m for the legalization of it because, it can help cure and treat many medical conditions out there. While drug control is a big issue over the nation and across the borders, marijuana is a very useful tool people could benefit from. Marijuana is one of the most controversial issues in society today. But yet, it is safer than alcohol who is one of the major causes of death in our nation and it’s a legal drug. According to Trista DeMuth, “Alcohol is one of the most toxic drugs, and can lead to death…” she points out that, “Marijuana on the other hand is not nearly as toxic and would take a thousand times the dose to have the same effect to kill someone. To this day, there is no report of someone dying from marijuana overdose”. (Marijuana’s good qualities, line 13-15). With this statement, it’s more than clear that marijuana is not a bad drug. It harms no one, and its safer to consume than other drugs. While on the other hand alcohol is. Furthermore, another legal but very harmful drug for humans is tobacco. Which causes lung cancer, according to American Lung Association, “Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in both men and women in the United States”. Many of people say marijuana is just as harmful as tobacco; this is false and has been proven by two large studies done by Stephen Sidney. According to Sidney, “marijuana smoking can’t kill…there 's no such thing as a fatal marijuana overdose” he concludes, “[marijuana] is less likely to harm than tobacco”. (Sidney para 5). This statement proves that marijuana is healthier than tobacco. Now with this said, which drug should be the legal one? Cannabis is being seeing as the “bad” drug which people get addicted to. The drug that makes hundreds of teens drop out of high school and which makes some of them a “no life”. But what people don’t understand, is that cannabis who we all know as marijuana, helps treat a bunch of disorders. Medical researchers have come to he conclusion that medical marijuana can help treat pain, migraines, relief from nausea, also with depression, insomnia, arthritis and asthma. This is just to name some. According to these researchers, “[this is] of great benefit to AIDS and cancer patients,” they believe that, “it makes them less severe and does help to control the symptoms”. (Bearman pg. 5). It is more than obvious that this precious naturally given plant can help control and treat many disorders and medical problems. Moreover, another positive thing about legalizing and using this herb medically is that, it would create hundreds maybe even thousands of jobs. That’s something that would definitely help our country out due to the situation where our economy stands today. Some economist say that “legalizing marijuana would not only save taxpayers billions of dollars…it would also jumpstart the economy to the tune of $100 billion a year or more,” he continues, “the report states that legalizing, taxing, and regulating marijuana would do wonders to reduce inflated budgets and generate new revenue streams.”(Benson para 1-2). There is hundreds of economists that support this thought. Marijuana should be legalized. Not only to help save lives and treat disorders but also to help grow our economy and let our country get back on its feet. Nevertheless, yea I understand that legalizing marijuana for medical use can cause crime to increase. Especially with all these drug cartels and the drug war across our borders. According to our government in California, “concluded that marijuana legalization would compromise public health and safety”. (Stimson para 8). Yes it’s a risk that our nation is taking. But crime is something that will always be present. Not only where drugs are involved but generally speaking. That’s something that we have to live and deal with. Why not make a wise use of this plant? It will help with the treat of many disorders. Millions of cancer patients will benefit from this. Our economy will grow. Yes we will be taking risks but there are more positive things to this than there are negative. Like many have said, “the good outweighs the bad” now lets legalize and use this plant how it was meant to be used in the first place!
