Stephanie Parker
Introduction to Victims Advocacy
Professor Ronald Tarpey In my opinion, I do not think the victims movement has reached its full potential. I feel this way because in any government, law, or movement there is always room for improvements. With society changing at an alarming rate, and crime getting more violent , there is room for improvement. As crime worsens, more laws are created, which means changes in the criminal justice system has to be made. This huge life changing organization is also the reason why my own daughter, Serena, decided to start Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) (“Candy Lightner Biography”). So many people have come to support me on this great journey. They are all the reason why MADD, and also SADD, has had such a great success on keeping the streets safer for our families, and also ourselves. This is not only true for the United States, but MADD has established chapters in Canada, Guam, Australia, Great Britain, Puerto Rico, and New Zealand (La Vigne). To add on to these great accomplishments, by 2014, MADD had helped to save over three hundred thousand lives (La Vigne). This is one of the many achievements we have made towards our goal “to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime, and prevent underage drinking” (La Vigne). However, we can all tell that I am still not happy, as evident with the fact that I am no longer a part of MADD. Every single day I get someone asking me why I am opposing the people that were with me through thick and thin and supporting my ideas. You see, the thing is, the purpose of MADD has shifted to the wrong side. People are no longer focusing on preventing drunk driving, but are now focusing on banning alcohol. I did…

Candace Lynne Lightner, also known as Candy Lightner, is well recognized as being the founder of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) (Overbey, 2006). Having been born in the year 1946 in Pasadena, California, Candace graduated from high school and proceeded to enroll in American River College in Sacramento where she also graduated (Lerner, 2011). She later married Steve Lightner and went on to have three children. When her daughter was an infant, Lightner’s car was involved in an accident where it was rammed into from behind by a drunken driver. Fortunately, Serena, the daughter, suffered minor injuries. However, six years down the line, Lighter’s son, Travis, was run over and seriously injured where he suffered numerous broken bones in the process (Levinson, 2002). He went into a coma but unfortunately received permanent brain damage. Travis was run over by an unlicensed driver who was impaired by tranquilizers while driving and what is perhaps most shocking is the fact that the driver did not receive a single ticket following the accident (Overbey, 2006).…

I guess they (the victims groups) would rather pay to incarcerate the offenders, in some cases it makes the victims feel safer. Right now I f agree, I have a friend - she and her 91 year old mother are being stalked by an habitual offender and so far the police haven't been able to do much about it (they need a picture or catch him in the act). The offender has burglarized their residence I believe five times now just in the past two weeks. The neighbors have been hit three days ago so at least there is now another police report in the same vicinity. The guy tried forging one of the mothers checks and got spooked at the bank and left his license, he is currently on parole and to my knowledge hasn't been picked up for that. Camera's in place,…
