Title: Candy Chromatography
Background Information and Research: Paper Chromatogrpahy is a analytical method that is used for seperating and identifying mixtures of color. There are two stages, the stationary phase and the mobile phase. The first is for a solid and the second for a liquid or gas. -Reference http://www.chemguide.co.uk/analysis/chromatography/paper.html
Purpose: To see how paper chromatography works.
Materials:
· Candy with a colored coating, like Skittles® or M&Ms® (4 different colors)
· Rubbing alcohol or isopropyl alcohol
· Coffee filters (2)
· Tall glasses or plastic cups (2)
· Pencil
· Ruler
· Tape
· Foil or paper plate
· Table salt
· Water
· Toothpicks or cotton swabs (4)
· Measuring cups/spoons
· Clean pitcher or 2-liter bottle
Procedure:

4. Make four dots along the line about 1/4 of an inch apart
5. Dip a cotton swab into one of the colored water and dab the color onto the pencil dot. Repeat this three times for each color, chaning the swab for each.
6.Prepare a salt solution using 1/8 teaspoons of salt and three cups of water.
7. Por the slat solution into a glass so that its a at a 1/4 of an ince level.
8. Tape the stripe to the pencil so that it hangs off the jar. Make the stripe barely touch the solution
9.Capillary action will draw the solution up, as it goes up through the dots the salt will separae the dye.
10. Repeat the steps using alcohol instead of the salt solutions.

Data and Observations:
I will be using a red, green, orange, and brown candy. The candies seem to stay their respective colors.
The Salt solution acts faster than the alchol

Predictions: I believe that the dye will be the same color it is on the candy when it comes off (red is red, green is green,
