Cancer Diagnostic Analysis
The confirmation of a cancer diagnosis is made by means of a tissue biopsy of the tumor or its secretions. A biopsy examination is the only method that can provide a definite positive or a negative diagnosis (McDonald, Clark, Tchou, Zhang, & Freedman, 2016). Other diagnostic methods that can give a probable diagnosis of cancer include the use of radiological imagines, such as x-rays, computed tomography scan (CT), magnetic resonance imagen (MRI) and ultrasound studies (US), which could help to localize the tumor, its size and spread. Certain blood exam could also assist with the

Before removal of the tumor, radioactive dye is instilled into the tumor bed. During surgery the surrounding lymph nodes are evaluated for the presence of the radioactive dye. The sentinel node is defined as the initial node that drains the tumor bed. The sentinel node is removed and evaluated by a pathologist for presence of cancer. Presence of cancer in the sentinel node is an indication that the disease is metastatic at the time of diagnosis.…

The Barium Swallow test where a patient swallows a liquid mixture while at an x-ray machine. The barium is opaque to the x-ray therefore allowing narrowing in the esophagus to be shown in pictures. The Endoscopy is a medical instrument that consists of a narrow flexible tube with a light and camera at the end in which it is used to look into the esophagus. It may also be equipped with a small attachment to take a sample or biopsy of the esophageal tissue. A biopsy is the removal of cells or tissue for the examination by a pathologist. The patient is usually slightly sedated. Next there is the PET scan or the Positron Emission Tomography Scan this is where the patient is given a dose of glucose that is altered so it is radioactive. Tumor cells require much more sugar in the form of glucose for energy than normal cells in the body. After receiving the glucose the patient usually is instructed to wait about an hour, this giving the cells in the body time to absorb large amounts of glucose before the scan. The PET scanner is able to locate where in the body there is an excess of radioactive glucose and where there are likely to be tumor cells. The radioactivity rapidly decays, so that it does not cause any lasting effects on the…

The only way to detect this cancer is to have the doctor feel the patient 's thyroid and check for lumps in the neck. If the doctor suspects that there is a lump, then the doctor may want to take a small amount of tissue from the thyroid which is called a fine-needle biopsy. This procedure is done with a small needle which is inserted into the thyroid at the base of the throat and tissue sample is extracted. The tissue is then looked at under a microscope to see whether it contains cancer. Papillary…

Some examples of imaging testing would be computed tomography (CT) scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), abdominal or endoscopic ultrasounds, cholangiopancreatography, angiography, and positron emission tomography (PET) scan. Blood diagnostic tests that measure carcinoembryonic antigens, like the CA 19-9, and pancreatic hormone levels such as glucose, insulin, and C-peptide are used to check blood levels and can help determine if there is a tumor present. Biopsy is the removing of a small section of tumor and looking at it under a microscope, the biopsy is then interpreted by a pathologist to determine whether the tumor is…
