Can social work profession replaced by non social work profession?
Social work has been a profession early in the twentieth century after the soar of social work education and well-organized charities (Richard, 2008). It was contributed by the charities workers, Abraham Flexner (an expert of professional education) and Ernest Greenwood who evaluated social work as a profession (DuBois & Miley, 1992). The following discussion will explain more about the reason why non-social work professionals are not suitable or incapable of playing the roles and function of social work.
First of all, social work has diverse roles in the society as social workers not only interact with individuals, but also groups and the communities such as a young woman plays different characters of daughter, grandchild, student and peer member and so forth. The main role of social work is to help people to help themselves. For this purpose, social workers may work as a consultancy, enabler, facilitator, planner, mediator and educator (Tracy & Dubois, 1987).
Besides, there are three major functions in social work (Boehm, 1959). The primary functions are: repairing the broken abilities, providing individual and social resources as well as preventing people from social dysfunction. These could be broadened to seven functions including enhancing the ability of people in solving problems effectively by their own selves, bridging people with social resources system, helping in interacting and amending the connection with society resources systems and people, or the connection within people and resources systems, making contribution to the development and improvement of social policy, allocating social resources and serving people as agents of social control (Pincus & Minahan, 1973).
The above roles and functions of social work are required to base on the values and knowledge skills in order to enhance the quality of the social work profession and ensure the interest of clients. During the process of judgment and intervention, it is necessary that social workers
