Anna has waited behind after school before setting off to walk home, hoping that the other children will no longer be around to bully her. She lives in a village and her road home is through bleak countryside. How does the writing develop your interest in Anna’s thoughts and feelings?
To help you answer this question, you might consider:




how the writer describes Anna’s surroundings how she portrays the ways the boys behave towards Anna how suspense is built up in the passage.

Anna runs up the road. Only another half-mile to home. The ponies in their winter coats look at her over their hay, as if they know something about her.
