Calogero Anello: Movie Analysis
From Italian gangsters to African American rebels you know name racial controversy and the Bronx tale has it all. The film takes place in the Fordham section of the Bronx in the 1960’s. Calogero Anello is a 9 year italian boy living in the Bronx, where they were notorious for gangster bars, racist people and an aggressive nature. Calogero witnesses a shooting in the street involving local gangster, Sonny, but refuses to betray him to the police. Sonny grows fond of the boy and begins to teach him how things are conducted on the streets. Calogero's father, Lorenzo, is a working man who wants his child to grow up and make his money honestly. They sported straight slick or nice wavy haircuts with nice watches and shiny pinky rings. In Italy fashion is serious and in this movie they nailed the look. They use italian dialect and Doowop music, making you feel like you are right there. The gambling scene in the beginning , the crew say things like “fuckin’ pig” , “mush”, “chooch”, “smooch” in these thick italian accents all . Throughout this movie you see of loud passionate conversations, especially C’s parents all through the movie they express passionately how she felt about Sonny and his business in the neighborhood. There is excessive profanity and aggressive behaviors in this movie, which is stereotypical for italians. Growing up people would always say italians are quick to beat you in the head with a bat, it is just something italians are were known to do. In the film there is a scene where C chases a man who owes him money, when one of sonny's friend see this, he advises Calogero to “beat em in the head with a fuckin’ bat.” C protecting Sonny was deemed as the right thing to do, even though he committed a homicide, the neighborhood supported his decision because italians are really big on loyalty to their race.
