California drought hurts the rest of the nation, because California is a breadbasket of the nation. California is growing more than a third of its vegetables and nearly two-thirds of its fruit and nuts. They had a mandatory 25% cut back in water consumption in all cities. Furthermore, predicted consumers would pay more for some groceries because of the California drought Because of the drought; berries rose in price by about 80 cents per clamshell to $3.88, broccoli by 11 cents per pound to $1.89, Grapes by 64 cents a pound to $3.06, melons by 24 cents a pound to $1.23, packaged salad by 23 cents a bag for $2.91, and peppers by 26 cents a pound to $2.39. However, don’t know yet is whether farmers will plant fewer crops because of the drought. These decisions are now being made in the field that could boost supermarket prices. The drought in California does have the potential to impact the price we pay for fresh eggs that we will pay at the counter.
Also, fewer homes will be running decorative fountains. However, because much of the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada has alarmingly disappeared, many ski resorts shut down early this year, including at Lake Tahoe, and some are now building zip lines, mountain bike trails and wedding venues keep tourists coming. The only thing getting better because of the drought is California wines. Wine grapes use relatively low water. That may be the only thing to toast about this drought. In conclusion, the purpose of this media coverage is to make people aware of the drought and how it affects not just the state but the nation as well. Because the nation rely’s on different states for different food products. I think it is beneficial to keep everyone in the loop on the drought so we can plan for the fall-out from the drought. The drought effects western part of the U.S. hard and I could not imagine having to ration my water, that I am custom to using. I feel for the people in these communities. Although, I will say I do not know of a permanent solution to prevent/ help with the problem with the
