Mathematical sequences can be used to model real life applications. Suppose you want to construct a movie theater in your town. The number of seats in each row can be modeled by the formula C_n = 16 + 4n, when n refers to the nth row, and you need 50 rows of seats.…

When we went to the library to find a book for English class, the first book I checked out was entitled The Last Nazi. It was a book about the last known nazi that lived through the holocaust. It was interesting at first but then it was really hard for me to continue to read, because not only was it a historical non-fiction, it also included a large variety of words above my reading level. The second book I chose was, Calculus The Easy Way, one of the reasons I chose that book was because I thought it was going to help me in math, but It was not a good choice for my essay. The third book I chose was from the library, out of all those books I couldn’t find a good one. When I was ready to leave, a book on the checkout counter caught my eyes. The book title is Need. It's about teens living in Nottawa, Wisconsin who join the newest, hottest, networking site. It's a site that allows people to request anything that they NEED. However, access to this site is only by invitation only. Anything at all can be asked and your request will be fulfilled only if you accomplish a certain task that will be assigned by the site itself. It's a fast paced book, it takes social media stalking and bullying to a whole new level.…

One very common use of algebra is when you go shopping. An example of this is when you have a certain number of objects that need to fit into a certain number of bags. Another use of algebra is filling up a gas tank. When doing this you have to calculate the cost of the amount going into your tank. An example of a use of algebra that it not very common is determining things like interest for loans. This is an important part of life and it is critical that one knows how to figure this type of math out correctly. An additional use of algebra in day to day life is budgeting. It is imperative to know how to do this so that you can correctly plan what to do with your money and how much you will have left after paying for necessary things. An added usage of algebra is when one is paying bills. By the means of algebra one will be able to figure out how much to pay and the amount of money they have…

Tackling biomedical engineering as my undergraduate degree has been a challenging and exciting experience. Though a rigorous endeavor, I am thankful for all it has offered and believe it has extensively prepared me for my future in medicine. My upper-level math courses have demanded a high level of critical thinking to understand abstract concepts, thinking I know will be useful when invoked to conceptualize in unconventional ways as a physician. The biomedical engineering curriculum I have undertaken involves a complex array of quantitative and analytical approaches to human systems. Comparing physiology to foundational engineering concepts has enhanced my understanding of the ways in which medicine and the human body function. Classes such…

Both doctors and nurses use math every day while providing health care for people around the world. Doctors and nurses use math when they write prescriptions or administer medication. Medical professionals use math when drawing up statistical graphs of epidemics or success rates of treatments. Math applies to x-rays and CAT scans. Numbers provide an abundance of information for medical professionals. It is reassuring for the general public to know that our doctors and nurses have been properly trained by studying mathematics and its uses for medicine. Doctors write prescriptions to their patients for various ailments. Prescriptions indicate a specific medication and dosage amount. Most medications have guidelines for dosage amounts in milligrams per kilogram . Doctors need to figure out how many milligrams of medication each patient will need, depending on their weight. If the weight of a patient is only known in pounds, doctors need to convert that measurement to kilograms and then find the amount of milligrams for the prescription. There is a very big difference between mg/kg and mg/lbs, so it is imperative that doctors understand how to accurately convert weight measurements. Doctors must also determine how long a prescription will last. For example, if a patient needs to take their medication, say one pill, three times a day. Then one month of pills is approximately 90 pills. However, most patients prefer two or three month prescriptions for convenience and insurance purposes. Doctors must be able to do these calculations mentally with speed and accuracy.…

Calculus is concerned with comparing quantities which vary in a non-linear way. It is used extensively in science and engineering since many of the things we are studying (like velocity, acceleration, current in a circuit) do not behave in a simple, linear fashion. If quantities are continually changing, we need calculus to study what is going on.…
