Cable's main competition for voice and Internet access came from Telco’s, which were not yet able to compete for television in most markets because DSL over most local loops could not provide enough bandwidth.…

Roughly a decade ago, the dawn of the “On Demand” feature in television broadcasting brought about a change to the broadcasting industry. For the first time ever, audiences were no longer forced to make their schedules around their favorite programs. Companies such as Comcast and one of its primary competitors, Verizon Communications, found success in the early days of the “On Demand” feature primarily due to its convenience. As time progressed however, alternative products entered the marketplace that challenged the success in which the television service providers were experiencing. Netflix Inc., a web-based service provider, directly challenged the “On Demand” feature by rolling out a product in which consumers had the option to watch a variety of shows or movies online by subscribing to their network. As the popularity of products released by Netflix and other competitors increased, mass media organizations such as Comcast and Verizon realized that they could no longer rest on the laurels of the “On Demand” feature, and had to look for ways to add value to their respective products.…

It is easy to see that internet streaming is the wave of the future. With more and more people getting online with broadband connections to homes and mobile devices, there is an increasing realization that many are paying too much for cable and dish services when the same programming can be accessed for free or more inexpensively. (Snider, 2011) They are also realizing that with video streaming there is no restriction on the time and place they can view the desired programming as long as it is after the original broadcast or in the case of cinematic films, after they are released from theatrical venues; in other words, video on demand. The convenience of “on demand” programming will allow a busy population to be more productive in other areas of their life when they do not have to schedule a time to watch their favorite shows. Although many shows, particularly live sports are currently being offered free to internet viewers in real time (e.g., ESPN3, NBC Sports, and CBS March Madness on Demand), this just adds to the attraction of video streaming.…

    D. Polan’s claims on The Sopranos genre: - Modernism because of its fragmented plotlines p.33 - Uses similar narrative techniques as sitcoms (Friends) p.35 – opening title, resemblance to a domestic sitcom. - Almost science-fictional direction that is only touched upon during dream sequence and when seeing The Sopranos world through Tony’s subconscious - The daytime soap opera operates, as does The Sopranos, with complexity and multiplicity of narrative lines, slowness of development, painful extension of duration, and an uneventful everydayness punctuated and punctured by moments of crisis or triumph, repetition, and a general resistance to easy, forward progression of a singular story. The Sopranos even directly acts like a traditional soap in…
