CVS Pharmacy Business Analysis
CVS Pharmacy is the second largest pharmacy chain in the United States. It operates over 7,000 pharmacies nationwide. Besides selling pharmaceuticals, CVS is also a retail store, offers photo printing services, and some of their pharmacies have Walk-in clinics called MinuteClinic.

The website www.missionstatements.com states the CVS Pharmacy’s mission statement is to “improve the lives of those we serve by making innovative and high-quality health and pharmacy services safe, affordable and easy to access” (2016). After reading this, I went to the CVS.com website to find their “About Us” page. Their website is divided into different tabs like Pharmacy, MinuteClinic, and Photo; but they didn’t have an link to their “About Us information. I

They showed this was part of their goals when they stopped selling tobacco product in 2014. They came to the conclusion that selling tobacco was going against their Mission and Vision because tobacco is the number one cause of lung cancer. Selling something that’s bad for people’s health was completely against their goals. They also offer walk-in clinics for people those who don’t have access for healthcare anywhere else. They sell vitamins, healthcare devices such as glucose meters, and usually they always have blood preassure monitors that anyone can use for free.

CVS states they are affordable. This is the point where I disagree with them. There are other pharmacies, like Walmart Pharmacy, that offer cheaper prescriptions. In fact, a patient without health insurance would have to enroll to CVS’ Health Savings Pass for $15 a year in order to have access to prescriptions at a discounted price while they could get a 30 day prescription supply at Walmart Pharmacy without the additional cost of a membership. Their MinuteClinic prices aren’t the lowest in the market either. A quick check up can cost up to $99, not including the cost for lab tests. A patient could be able to get free or low-cost Healthcare at a County clinic or at the Health Department.

To conclude, CVS Pharmacy’s Mission and Vision are well stated. Their strategy is helping them reach their goals, but they still have to find ways to make them more

Since this store’s biggest profit area is the pharmacy department they are always in competition with Walgreens. These two are across town from each other but are the only two pharmacies to supply the three towns that are in this area. The next closest pharmacy is Wal-Mart twenty miles away. CVS competes to have the lowest prices to get all the business instead of Walgreens. CVS advertises that they bet Walgreens prices by carrying generic medication to help lower prices.…

CVS has recently decided to eliminate cigarettes from their vast options of items to purchase at all of their locations. Surprising at first you might ask yourself, why would a company willingly give up on over two billion dollars of profit annually? The primary answer being conveyed by CVS executives is that “Tobacco products have no place in a setting where health care is delivered.” This company is making a bold statement that money does not affect the way we feel about our customers. Scott Mushkin, an analyst with Wolfe Research in New York stated that “ CVS has aligned its business to the pharmacy, Tobacco is an ancillary business, and it’s not the reason why most people go to CVS.”…

CVS Caremark recently announced that it will discontinue the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products. CVS Caremark is a well-known pharmaceutical chain whose primary focus is a reinventing pharmacy to help people on their path to better health. The news comes as a shock to many of its consumers with plans to affect 7,600 stores by October 2014. Not only is this going to affect tobacco users it will ultimately cause the company to lose approximately 2 billion dollars in annual revenue. I will say that I a m in agreeance with CVS with making this drastic decision as it will eventually enhance the company’s mission statement as stated by President and Chief Executive Officer, Larry Merlo, “inconsistent with our purpose-reducing chronic disease…cigarettes and tobacco products have no place in a setting where health care is delivered.…
