Byronic Hero
Eighth canto:
Don Juan is sold to Turks. And he is placed in an apartment of the palace, from which he escaped. And then he takes part in the war between Turks and Russians. Eighth canto is about his participation in the final assault on Ismail. During the war, he is swept away by a thirst for glory and proves himself to be a soldier of prowess and courage.
3: he is against war by saying that “war’s merit it by no means might enhance, to waste so much gold for a little dross”. 20: “of dead and dying thousands” show his disapproval of war.
4: And he criticizes hypocritical gentry because they support and wage the war for desire for a higher title, a loftier station. He reveals the dark side of the society here.
19: he courageously joins a corps [kɔː] and fights against enemies with great efforts. He actively fights for freedom.
32: during fighting, his own corps disappeared and he received no command. He “rushed where the thickest fire” in order to win the honor.
140: contrast—Juan is contrasted with others in order to tell us that he is kind and humanitarian.
What I mentioned above is related to his good character. But he is imperfect. He has his own limitation. From stanza 3, he is against war, but he approvals war if the soldiers fight for freedom in a war. A war fought for freedom also waste “much gold for a little dross”.
19: he is not experienced and does not have a clear goal to fight. He “fought away with might and main, not knowing the way”.
32: he was separated. As a Byronic hero, he is isolated from society as a wanderer. It is common. Anyway, he is in exile after his scandal from chapter 1.
24:He is “a broth of a boy” and a thing of impulse. He can be sentimental and self-destructive by defying moral standards. And he can also be courageous enough to participate in a war.
From the previous chapters, Juan is depicted as a descent of noble and sexually appealing. He is educated. Also, he continuously obsesses with women. And he has distaste for

Believing in their sure victory, the characters are excited about the prospect of war and seek adventure through service in the military, as well as glory. The clearest example of this appears in RB. The novel begins with a Northern youth, Henry, who romanticizes the idea of war, thinking of it in terms of Greek poems and ancient history, daydreaming of battles between heroes in Greek tales he read in school. At first disappointed in his belief that the wars of old, such as ancient Greek struggles, can no longer be found, his enthusiasm for the Civil War begins after hearing news of Northern victories. Motivated to enlist by news of victory along with romantic notions of war, he seeks to emulate the Greek heroes that he admires. Leaving home, he’s disappointed when his mother gives him practical advice rather than a poetic speech, having expected her to demand he return “with his shield or on it” in Spartan fashion. The Civil War is but a game for him to live his boyish fantasies when he first…

In the short story “Ashes for the Wind”, Hernando Tellez uses Juan Martinez to show that sometimes you have to make sacrifices in order to fight corruption and injustice. Through Juan, his wife Carmen and their baby, the author tries to show that people should not be pushed around and intimidated, which is why I think that Juan is a hero. To me being a hero can mean many things, wether it is to inspire, help or even take a stand and a first step towards something better and good; a hero is a hero and that’s who Juan is. He stood up to the authorities, even though at the time he may not have know or realized this, by sacrificing his life and his family’s, he sends a message and makes a point. Juan represents freedom, innocence and shows the corruption in the government. Freedom to vote for what you want and not what you are forced to; freedom to other farmers and people to make their own choices and not be thrown out, pushed away and punished because of corruption or their votes. Innocence, in the fact that Juan and his family died an innocent death that was not deserved just because Juan voted for what he wanted and when the person who won turned out to be someone else they ordered his death under the suspicion that he was a resistor. These two things help to show the people that there is corruption in their government and that people aren’t being treated equally and fair, that someone has to do something about it and Juan took the first stand. He was a leader, a hero and for all we know could have been the reason for people to start a revolution, that eventually set things right again and saved lives of many people. It shows that through each action, not matter how big or small, we make our…

Plato, Aristotle and Cicero, the fathers of the Just War tradition, develop and enhance the concept of civic virtue and the necessity to uphold such morality during the most chaotic, violent and brutal of times – war. They each defend the necessity of war; yet emphasize the correct code of conduct in war and what makes an honorable and just warrior. Today, war is much less engrained in our culture; our sons are not born with the future of a warrior. However, when there is war, we hear of many unjust and dishonorable acts such as mass rape, genocide, or specifically the My Lai Massacre. Plato, Aristotle and Cicero lived through a culture of war, defending it as necessary to keeping the peace. Because it was so engrained in their culture, a normalcy, they were not as concerned with the inhumane idea that defines war- killing another human being. Today, we do not live in a culture of constant war, therefore we are more susceptible to becoming overwhelmed by the trauma of violence. Plato, Aristotle and Cicero, provide guidelines of a just warrior however, had not yet discovered what it is that can turn a good man into a bad one, and what horrible aspects of war he may fall victim to. Today, true courage means fighting against dishonor, because unfortunately, war turns the most honorable men into dishonorable ones.…

Morpurgo demonstrates this through his text, ‘Private Peaceful’ through the key theme of injustice in war, the darkness and brutality of harrowing events and the reasoning that war doesn’t solve anything. In the early nineteenth century famous poet Lord Byron embarked on a project that did the literary world a favor for centuries to follow. Don Juan had already become a famous character who provided readers from centuries passed tales of swashbuckling antics and manly triumphs of battle, travel, conquest, and of course women. First made famous, most likely, by a Spanish play in the 14th century; Don Juan 's character is most often portrayed as a wealthy, hyper-sexual womanizer who goes through many situations involving women. The impending conflicts with men such as the ladies ' fathers and English Lords provide the literary opportunity for the authors to twist the tale as they please.…
