INTRODUCTION
The seminal work (Hofstede 1994) identifies the generic factors that characterize value systems in different national cultures, including those of software and systems developers, applying statistical cluster analysis. The analysis was based on questionnaires from more than 50 countries. Each country could be given an index score for each of the following factors or dimensions of national cultures:
Power distance characterizes the extent to which people consider it natural that power, status, and privileges are distributed unequally among individuals or that this distribution has no high significance in their lives. In small power distance countries subordinates and superiors consider each other as existentially equal, and decentralization is popular, while large power distance countries subscribe to authority of bosses and centralization.
Individualism vs. collectivism characterizes people’s esteem of individual activities and successes vs. the importance of their belonging to a social group. In an individualist culture people are supposed to take care only of themselves and their immediate families, and remain emotionally independent from the group. In a collectivist culture people distinguish between in-groups and out-groups, expect their in-group to look after them, and individuals define their identity by relationships to others and group belonging. The individual and the group have a mutual obligation of protection in exchange for loyalty.
Masculinity vs. femininity is better expressed as confrontation and quantity orientation vs. compromise and quality orientation. In masculine cultures importance is placed on assertiveness, competitiveness, and materialism in the form of earnings and advancement, promotions and big bonuses. A feminine culture indicates the concern for people, the quality of life, nurturing, and social well-being.
Uncertainty avoidance characterizes people’s attitude toward ambiguous or unknown situations. Innovation

    Many small businesses and nonprofit organizations assiduously avoid more than a cursory flirtation with marketing research because they misunderstand what it is and what it can accomplish. Five misconceptions often dominate managers’ thinking about it: 1. The “big decision” myth. You turn to marketing research only when you have a major decision to make; otherwise it has little to do with the details of day-to-day decision making. 2. The “survey myopia” myth. With its random samples, questionnaires, computer printouts, and statistical analyses, marketing research is synonymous with field survey research. 3. The “big bucks” myth. Marketing research is so expensive that it can only be used by the wealthiest organizations, and then only for their major decisions. 4. The “sophisticated researcher” myth. Since research involves complex and advanced technology, only trained experts can and should pursue it. 5. The “most research is not read” myth. A very high proportion of marketing research is irrelevant to managers or simply confirms what they already know. Often the research is so poorly designed and written up or so esoteric that it simply ends up in the bottom drawer. In this article I consider each of the myths and show why they are misleading. Then I suggest several approaches to low-cost research. The “Big Decision” Myth Too often, marketing research is deemed necessary only for decisions involving large financial stakes and in such cases should always be carried out. But research should be viewed from a cost-benefit perspective. Its costs are usually of two types—the expenses for the research itself and the amount of lost sales and lost competitive advantage caused by delaying a decision until the results are in.     What is the positioning of this book? Who is it for? The positioning of this book in its author’s words is: “While there is no shortage of textbooks and monographs dealing with all aspects of research…experience in preparing students for project research work has highlighted that few offer a comprehensive overview of the issues and options facing the student embarking on [a major research project] for the first time.” Thus, the book is designed for self-study by students who are embarking on a research project. It is not limited to traditional research theses, such as Honours, MPhil/MSc, or PhD, but also covers coursework degree research projects such as MBA projects. However, it is not intended as a textbook for a conventional undergraduate or postgraduate Market Research course. In terms of research students (as in Honours, Masters, and PhD theses), one of Michael Baker’s strong qualifications for this topic is that he has supervised over 50 doctoral candidates to successful completion (!). Additionally, he has been an examiner for many doctoral theses, a journal editor, a head of department, etc. (there is not enough space here to go through his long CV of achievements!). Baker is also a frequent visitor to Australasia as a visiting professor.
