The scale that this “man-made” disaster was at seemed unacceptable and disgraceful, as shown through Dave Egger’s harrowing story of Zeitoun. The mass destruction that Hurricane Katrina caused will forever go down as one of the worst natural disasters in American history in which the government unfortunately had a role in. The insufficiency and corruption conducted in that disaster will forever be a reminder of the darkness of government, so a catastrophe will never happen like that in the next phenomenon that…

Deforestation stepped up during the international trade embargo, between 1991-1994, as people burned trees for the fuel they could no longer import. Haiti's exploding population growth hasn't helped either. Strapped for cash and burdened by innumerable needs, the government has not placed a major emphasis on conservation. Only $300,000 has been earmarked for the environment in Haiti's 1995-1996 budget--only about .17 percent of the government's overall…

The so called Dauphin Islands located in the western end of Gulf Coast has, according to the Gillis and Barringer, “...proved to be one of the most hazardous places in the country for waterfront property. Since 1979, nearly a dozen hurricanes and large storms have rolled in and knocked down houses, chewed up sewers and water pipes and hurled sand onto the roads.”, henceforth one has to question about the feasibility and rational behind the government programs which are then set in motion to cover the cost of rebuilding areas decimated by such large storm systems and hurricanes. As aforementioned, it is not only the cost of rebuilding houses, but also the cost of rebuilding public infrastructures (roads, utilities, etc) and public services; consequently it is a monumental volume of public expenditure in the benefit of few well-off communities who choose a certain life style. Such cost associated with the rebuilding tends to build up on intrinsic facts related to a disaster zone, for instance one would have to…

Between 1990 and 2010, Haiti lost an average of 750 ha, which is 0.65% per year. Haiti lost 12.9% of its forest cover, or around 15,000 ha in total in these 20 years. (Mongobay Haiti deforestation data, 2010). This deforestation ensures that soil looses moist of its water-holding capacity and therefore makes Haiti even more vulnerable for flash floods and frequent mudslides caused by heavy rain from tropical storms and hurricanes. The tsunami caused high amount of rubble and with this belongings flooded away. Unclear property rights and lack of land titles complicated shelter recovery efforts (UNHCR, UNAID 2010).…

Day-to-day business control resided entirely on the Operations Manager (Torres) whose services were initially valued at P25,000, the same amount each of the three capitalists invested. While it was not discussed whether this contribution arrangement would have held perpetually through all financing needs, it should have been reasonable to expect Torres to contribute actual cash in succeeding funding requirements. Moreover, management accountability on the part of Torres to the three capitalists was not discussed. If setting up an arbitrary P75,000 for the first prawn crop was already unqualified, the inexperienced group also did not plan for quantitative targets after the first prawn crop. Management control was not emphasized; hence, a system for performance feedback and evaluation was not established.…
