Business Analysis: Caterpillar Inc.
Caterpillar being global leading producer of construction and mining equipment operates in Energy, Transportation, Construction and Resource Industries (*SRG 2014). It is over ninety years Caterpillar Inc. put efforts to develop ambitious sustainability goals to make encouraging impact in every region they operate. With revenues of over $47 billion achieved in 2015 Caterpillar made interested their customers to stimulate infrastructure, energy and natural resource development through acceptance of remanufactured products and components (Caterpillar 2016).
Remanufacturing can be defined as a chain of production activities on product towards its restoration to achieve the original or better performance compliant to quality specifications (SRG

Caterpillar was among the first manufacturers in 1973, which developed the remanufacturing idea when very few organizations could dream about circular economy at that time. Within three decades Caterpillar proved not only commercial viability of remanufacturing altogether with technical rationality in terms of quality specifications but also evidenced delivery of great environmental rewards. For example, Caterpillar delivered over 70,000 ton of remanufactured products in 2010 against 45,000 ton in 2005 (EMF 2013).
First, remanufacturing concept had not been initiated to support the circular economy philosophy as at that time it was not developed yet. Caterpillar adopted principles of remanufacturing following its competition strategy in the diesel engine market.
The study conducted in 1979 by Caterpillar on the truck market in America identified vast opportunities and strong competitive advantage, realized in 1995 with attained considerable share of the U.S.

Today, Caterpillar can derive up to 60% of parts and components from the old engines and they have target to increase the usage of old parts up to 75% (Stahel 1995). To achieve this target Caterpillar need to expand their storage capacity in terms of number of parts stored for remanufacturing, improve inspection and reduction of components disposal. Some of the old engine items (gaskets, bearing, filter, etc.) will wear out and it hardly to utilize old components use up to higher than 75%. However the technical complication is shortage of techniques and devices to inspect the quality of returned parts. For example, bearing frequently has a remaining duration exceeding 85% of total lifecycle at the time they are disposed (Stahel 1995).
Caterpillar targets to keep information log about condition of main parts with support of digital technology to track product units on sites. This technique allows observing overall condition of the parts, number of operated hours and reducing risks of holding and functioning costs for the customer to arrange in-time take back engines process in remanufacturing

One of the proposals is to increase the company’s market shares by designing a new product line advocated as “safe, effective and eco-friendly”. In addition, the product’s packaging would also be derived from recycled material which will help the company save money and re-enforce its green initiatives. In turn, the company will be able to price the product at a higher rate to match the competitors’ market price for green products. These strategies will enable the company to double its net profit as it reduces cost and increases profit margin.…

Hello James, I completly agree with you about recyling parts. I think there are a lot of opportunities for recylce and that is one of the easies way to contribute for sustainbility. But sometimes I questioned myself if it is really worth it. We have plenty of room in our landfills, and there is no need to recycle everything, then why have so many worked sohard to bring about more recycling? Is that whole effort the result of delusional, sentimental thinking? If we back off from recycling as our population continues to grow, we may find ourselves needing to start recycling a lot in a hurry, without systems in place to do it. Some substances are more worthwhile to recycle than others, depending on the energy required to extract the raw material,…

Harley-Davidson now expects suppliers to focus strategically on cost, delivery, and quality improvement and to hit established cost and quality targets. Suppliers are expected to meet “twice the level of quality” and to develop a written strategic plan to achieve goals for quality improvement. Suppliers are graded according to defective “parts-per-million” and it has a target goal of 48 defective parts-per-million that suppliers are expected to achieve. Harley-Davison sends suppliers a monthly report showing their quality and delivery performance, and if the supplier receives a bad report Harley-Davidson sends their people to the supplier to determine the problems and help them resolve them. If the supplier does not improve its performance, it is replaced. In 1995 defective parts-per-million for suppliers were generally around 10,000; however, by 2001 approximately 75% of Harley-Davidson’s supplier base was performing at 48 defective…

    (a) The issue that I and my group agreed upon was recycling as we wanted to raise awareness on the importance of recycling and help people to understand the benefits of recycling; Recycling helps conserve important raw materials and protects natural habitats for the future. Using recycled materials in the manufacturing process uses considerably less energy than that required for producing new products from raw materials – even when comparing all associated costs including transport etc. Plus there are extra energy savings because more energy is required to extract, refine, transport and process raw materials ready for industry compared with providing industry-ready materials.…

Running head: SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS Sustainable Solutions Paper Walmart has some of the best supply chain methods in the market, and is working to become an industry leader in sustainability. Despite this, there is much criticism of this ‘giant’, and an in-depth look of their organization from a sustainable lens will review their successes, failures and areas of opportunity. Senge (2008) provides a Sustainable Value Framework in which to evaluate the sustainability of a company. He says that in order for the company to be truly sustainable, it must be balanced in all four quadrants, (Senge, Smith, Kruschwitz, Laur, & Schley, 2008). The quadrants “above the line” include innovation and repositioning, and growth. “Below the line” are cost and risk reduction, and reputation and legitimacy. Those above the line generally are directed toward the future, where those below the line are focused on today. Walmart has done…
