Every year in the first day of the first lunar month is our Lunar New Year, which we usually called the Spring Festival, the most historical festival in China, which can be traced back to 4000 years ago.The new year is a new beginning, a fresh start to our new life. So the Spring Festival considered the most important festival in China. The procedure of the festival is defiantly complicated, but for a better understanding about it we need to start with the history of the Spring Festival,
Once upon a time, there was a monster lived in mountains called Nian . It always came down from the mountains and attacked people and livestock, destroying everything in sight. Everyone suffered a great deal. Even though many people tried to drive it away, they all failed. But after they found out it was afraid of the light and fire. So, one night several young men decided to gather together used fireworks, torches, knives and stones to frightened it and then killed it. Everyone celebrated after hearing the news of Nian’s killing and lived happily ever after. This is the origin of the Spring Festival.
As the most important festival in China, the preparations of the Spring Festival are really complicated. Preparations usually tend to begin about a month before. First, we must give our houses a huge, thorough clean up, painting the walls, replacing the old furniture, washing the windows and curtains. To finish up the house cleaning we sweep the floor even the part that under sofas and beds. It’s a huge project, but everyone enjoys it. Because according to traditions, a thorough cleaning represents sweeping away all traces of bad luck in hopes to making way for good incoming luck. Second, a week before the festival we usually go to the market and buy presents for our family members especially for children. The second thing we need to buy is the decoration.
