Dragon Ball Analysis Japanese animation, or anime, is extremely popular in not only Japan, but all around the world. Many different shows are available for us to watch in America. Anime has worked itself into our culture. Viewing and analyzing anime can give us a vast glimpse into Japanese culture and history. The characters in anime look different, behave different, and are in different settings then your normal American cartoon. The anime cartoon I have chosen to analyze is a very popular show called Dragon Ball. One can find many cultural crossovers, distinctly Japanese behaviors, and things that are not translated well into US culture when watching Dragon Ball. The episode I chose is the first ever aired episode. It is called "Bulma and …show more content…
In the episode, there are a few different characters. Goku is an orphan that lives in the mountains. There is a beautiful teenage girl that is with them, Bulma. These are the two main characters of the show. She is searching for mystical balls that grant wishes called dragon balls. They come together when Bulma hits Goku head-on while driving. Bulma already has two of the balls, and decides to let Goku join her in her quests so she can utilize his strength and Dragon Balls that he has received from his grandfather. They go together to their adventures on a motorcycle, but Bulma is kidnapped by a giant flying dinosaur. Goku takes out the monster with his Power Pole and rescues her. There are many things that are distinctly Japanese. The way anime portrays a particular emotion is noticeably Japanese. They are symbols used to communicate feelings. Anime often uses codes to display feelings. For example, a character may …show more content…
Humility is very important. Humility is a part of Confucian teachings (Confucius, 1). It is replicated in the cartoons. A character in anime flaunting his or her powers is very rare. They are often very humble. Teenagers in Japan are also not as confident as they are in America, and you can notice this too. Bulma wants the dragon balls so she can wish for a perfect boyfriend.
