On Wednesday September 16th of 2015, I will be going to the Smithsonian National Zoo with a group of my friends. The Zoo was founded in 1889. It is one of the oldest zoos in the world. There are 1800 animals that live in the zoo. One of the most famous spots in the zoo for tourists to see is the Giant Panda exhibit. The giant pandas recently just gave birth to baby pandas. I have only been to the Smithsonian National Zoo once. I went in eighth grade for a school wide field trip. I love seeing animals and going to the zoo. Back where I am from (Delaware) there are not any zoos or big public attractions for young kids and teenagers.…

    La Zoo Observation

. LA zoo is fantastic and there are plenty of animals to observe. The employees were friendly and provided educational facts to the public. This is the second time that I visit LA Zoo because I want to observe the activities and behavior of some selected primates. I spent most of the time observing all the animals and learning about them and their native habitats. LA Zoo is laid out by continental area, so the primate exhibits are scattered throughout the zoo. I began with the New World monkey located in the South American section of the zoo. In exhibit area 75, I saw three species of New World monkeys. All of these species have prehensile tails. These species are the black-handed spider monkey, black howler monkey, and crested capuchin monkey.…

My strongest leadership qualities include sympathy for others, perseverance, and motivation. When I see others in need of help, I am able to sympathize with them and I become motivated and driven to seek help for them. I persevere, and give my best effort until I feel I have done what I can. My leading by example inspires others to pitch in too, and together we can rise up to the cause. This can be seen in many famous instances of bravery and leadership, such as with Dian Fossey and her fight to end gorilla slaughter. These qualities are very important not only to be a good leader, but a good person as…

Three reasons why I think that I will be a successful leader are that I have: motivation, time management skills, and people skills. The first reason, motivation, is one of the best traits that you could have. Motivation is used when your employees or workers aren’t having a good day or are down in the dumps. You use motivation to brighten up their days, whether it’s something that you would say to them or if it’s something you give them to build their confidence and will to work on what they are working on.…

It takes many affective personality traits to be a great leader like Dr. Monroe, but the traits I admire most are her locus of control, emotional intelligence, and her integrity. Dr. Monroe’s locus of control allowed her to truly believe in herself and achieve many personal goals such as obtaining a Doctorate Degree and becoming a high school principal. I think that her drive and confidence in her ability to transform FDA must have been very inspiring for her staff members to do their best at achieving the mission, as well. However, inspiring staff and students to change their attitudes could not have been an easy task in an intercity school where academic success ranks low among other socioeconomic priorities. This is where I think Dr. Monroe’s emotional intelligence played a big role in keeping her followers on task and motivated to achieve her vision. Lastly, I think that Dr. Monroe’s integrity was the glue that kept the mission together. Dr. Monroe was attempting to do something that most people never though could be possible, which required the full effort and participation of students, faculty, parents, and community members. She couldn’t risk losing the trust or drive of her followers by being dishonest, engaging in unethical behavior, being absent, or working for her personal gain. The transformation of FDA was successful because Dr. Monroe encouraged her faculty to be creative and try new things, higher standards were set, and students, as well as, teachers were treated like capable…

    Zoo Report

Throughout my zoo experience I did observe some unique and different behaviors that would most likely not occur in the wild. Since I watched the gibbons the longest I have much information on them. On behavioral difference it is based on the environment since now they are swinging on symmetrical poles and no longer tree branches. I’m sure they are less cautious of breaking branches and do not even different sized branches or limbs. As I have researched I have discovered that many gibbons, because of their fast swinging, will fracture many bones when a weak branch breaks or fails to hold the gibbons weight. As stated in the book even though traditionally gibbons are monogamous they are sometimes, in the wild, flexible with this mating habit. However since they are in the cage this is almost impossible. One female will be with only one male. Also they are particularly territorial. Nonetheless when in a caged environment the necessary calls to keep other gibbons or calls to warn gibbons about predators may not be required any longer since there is no threat. The zoo as a confined environment is much dissimilar than the wild natural environment. The space for which an animal has to move around can be very limited for the primates. For example the gibbons, they would swing very fast but then have to stop immediately to turn around and begin swinging in the opposite direction. In a natural environment this would not be a problem. The eating behaviors of the animals would also be different in the wild. In the zoo I suppose that obtaining meals is rather an easy task for these primates. I observed a gibbon go inside of its shelter and return with some vegetables. In its natural environment it would probably have to work a little bit harder to acquire food. “Monkey chow” also would probably not be on the menu in a Southeast Asia jungle.…

    The Zoo Story

Edward Albee’s “The Zoo Story” is a one act play that shows what alienation and loneliness can drive a man to do. It is a unique story in the sense that you almost feel as though you are reading in on a social experiment. I consider it is an experiment because of how the reactions between the two characters Peter and Jerry lead up to an intense and life affecting climax between the two. The idea of The Zoo Story is about a middle class man with a wife and two daughters named peter who you can say is quite receptive to what life has given him so far. However, you also have a man named jerry who is just about the opposite. Jerry is unfortunately friendless and not to happy with what life has brought to his plate. One day these two characters have a date with destiny on a New York City park bench. As Peter is minding to himself Jerry comes along and tries to befriend him. The socialization between the two doesn’t go as planned for Jerry. Nevertheless, Jerry walked into that conversation with another plan. It was one that included his own death. Eventually, it ends up into a confrontation between the two where Jerry is punching thus forcing Peter into defending himself. Jerry then pulls out a knife and tosses it towards Peter forcing his hand. In self defense, Peter picks up the knife and holds it up which then leads to Jerry charging towards the knife and thus murdering himself. Peter reactively says “Oh my God” whereas then with Jerry’s last breath he says “Oh…My...God is a combination of scornful mimicry and supplication”. His last words give you an insight on what this novels idea could be.…

The Audubon Zoo is located in New Orleans, Louisiana and is a 501(3)(c) non-profit organization. In 1914 the Audubon Commission was created to maintain and develop Audubon Park. In 1919 the Audubon Institute was established as the parent agency. Over the next several decades many changes would occur including the addition of a monkey cage, mammal cage and a deer paddock. Louisiana school children purchased the first elephant in 1924 and shortly thereafter an aquarium and sea lion pool was added. Through the Great Depression of the 1930s and 1940s the zoo was barely able to keep its doors openand in the 1950s it was labeled an animal “ghetto” by the media. In 1970 the U.S. Humane Society insisted the zoo be brought to industry standards.…
