vCJD is the human form of BSE. The symptoms of this disease are similar to those in cattle. People with vCJD begin to lose their memory, and are unable to concentrate. They may experience a change in personality, emotional disturbance, or even madness (basically tired and crazy). The incubation period of this disease is from years to decades. The average age of death with classic CJD is 68 years. However, the average age of death with vCJD is 28 years. When the first signs of the disease surface, the infected person may already have brain damage. The prion’s target is making holes in the brain; basically killing cells until holes are visible in the brain tissue. (See picture example 2). There are medicines that doctors can prescribe to ease a patient’s pain or symptoms. The disease lasts for 14+ months. The patient eventually falls into a coma and tragically dies. Luckily, the ultimate chances for humans to acquire Mad Cow Disease are very, very low. In fact, there have only been 3 reported cases in the U.S.! “BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy).”
