Taking Center Stage:
Glenn Close is a show stopper… literally.
Last Wednesday, Glenn Close brought SUNSET BOULEVARD to a standstill as she scolded an audience member for taking photos in the middle of the show. And it wasn’t her first time. More than 20 years ago while performing the same role, Close told the audience “We can either have a press conference or continue with the show,” after camera flashes disrupted her

Panic! At the Shoe Factory
Brendon Urie of Panic! At The Disco is suiting up (or should we say ‘shoeing up’) to take over the role of Charlie Price in KINKY BOOTS. He’ll be in the role until August 6th. If you can’t see the show in person, check out this clip of his performance of ‘Soul of a Man!’ LINK
See you next time, Dolly.
It seems Bette Midler won’t be taking the Tony’s stage to perform this year. The HELLO, DOLLY! star will present an award and her co-star, David Hyde Pierce is likely to perform a solo though nothing is set in stone. HELLO, DOLLY! is nominated for best musical revival in addition to nine other nominations.

As a performing arts major, you have to have a large repertoire of shows you have seen or have listened to. I have never seen any shows live, only on television or video cassettes. In New York, I finally got to lose my broadway virginity and was able to watch what a real broadway show looks like, and I couldn't have picked a better musical than Hairspray. This musical has one of the most imaginative set design, incredible and catchy music, and important messages.…

Upon my arrival to the ticket booth, I wasn't quite sure what musical I would be watching. Then I stumbled over The Fantasticks, which currently the number one with most off Broadway performances. It was first premiered in 1960, and it was able to have been going on since that long, something about had to be good. I wasn't quite clear what to expect, but just something different. The auditorium had, give or take, 200 seats. After settling down, I opened my program booklet for an overture about the musical. Book and lyrics were by Tom Jones. Music was by Harvey Schmidt. It was also directed by Tom Jones, and the original production stage was by Word Baker.…

“Hamilton” is a rare production to hit Broadway. Nothing like this has been done before, which is why the musical is so groundbreaking. It has inspired me to put a creative spin on my work, and ignore people who try to shoot down any ideas I have that may seem a little “out-there.” When Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator and star of “Hamilton,” first started working on his musical, people laughed at…

I attended the traveling Broadway production of Disney’s Newsies on February 14th, at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis. Being a fan of the movie but not knowing much about the musical, I was not sure what to expect. However, the show was a huge success, and it definitely has earned a place as one of my favorite musicals of all time.…

Sitting in a dark theatre, an audience begins to rustle in their seats with excitement, anxiously awaiting the start of the show. The lights dim and the anticipation are diminished as the lights come up, the set of a street side unveils, and the beat begins. In one instant, the audience is transported from a simple theatre to the lively street-side of the neighborhood of Washington Heights, New York. This production is the 2008 Tony-winning “Best Musical” In the Heights. Written and composed by Lin Manuel Miranda, the show combines hip-hop and rap music with a variety of dancing styles to portray the life in the barrio of the immigrant filled neighborhood of Washington Heights in Manhattan, New York. By watching the show, the audience experiences the struggles of life, which include dropping out of college, failing to pay rent, losing loved ones, and living within a world where immigrants and the poor do not have power. The musical demonstrates how communities of immigrants live their lives to promote positive identity for their cultural background by establishing pride within ones race. In the Heights is a cultural representation of how acceptance into American Culture is not done by total assimilation but rather through promotion of cultural diversity within a neighborhood.…

Dina Slawson, artistic director and owner of Academy of Theatre Arts (ATA), took on a monumental challenge when choosing to perform this musical. ATA opened its doors in 2003. Expert teachers were hired to teach classes in singing, acting and dance to kids ranging in ages from 4-18. Although ATA may not be a large theatre, its intimate feeling adds to the performance. The building was originally an office space until Slawson transformed it. The house sits 150 people, the stage is about 30 feet long, the wing space is 2 feet wide, one backstage room where the performers change and keep all props and set pieces. All of these circumstances were never a hard challenge for Slawson and her theatre companies to overcome. “ATA… we make it work” is a common phrase used in…

Stylistically, southern rap relies on exuberant production and straightforward lyrics incorporating car culture, fashion trends, nightlife, and unique lingo into the songs. Though many early Southern rap artists released their music independently or on mixtapes after having difficulty securing record-label contracts, today Southern Hip Hop has a large following with several Grammy award winning artists to their credit and has crossed the bridge into musical theater. Currently the sold out production of pop culture’s Broadway hit “Hamilton” Terry Teachout of the New York Times claims” Hamilton is the most exciting and significant musical of the decade. Sensationally potent and theatrically vital, it is plugged straight into the wall socket of contemporary music. This show makes me feel hopeful for the future of musical theater.…

    Adapting Plays Into Movies

When researching a topic such as this, one must go beyond reading. One must not only dive into a script or a periodical or academic journal, one must immerse themselves into the films that have come about as a result of the transformation of turning a play into a cinematic experience. When going about researching this topic, I watched the movie Chicago (Dir. Rob Marshall, 2002) as well as looked over the original Broadway script (By Jon Kander, Fredd Ebb, and Bob Fosse 1975). The original Broadway production opened June 3, 1975, at the 46th Street Theatre and ran for 936 performances. Chicago's 1996 Broadway revival holds the record for the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, and is the fourth longest-running show in Broadway history. After all the success, What better way to continue the magic of this thrilling show than create a movie out of it? The story tells of two women (Roxie Hart and Velma Kelley) who live in Chicago and are responsible for murdering their husbands and must fight to get out of prison, in order to pursue their dreams of Broadway stardom.…

    History of Broadway

There have been many debates on whether or not Broadway musicals are considered “serious” art forms. People feel that a musical can never be taken seriously if the character is always singing sporadically, which is very unusual in real life. However, musicals have been around for quite some time now, many musicals are being adapted into major motion pictures, many children are raised on the famous Disney musical cartoons and everybody( whether they’ll admit it or not) has seen at least one musical in their lifetime and are able to sing some of the songs from it. It seems that musicals have made an impact on society but yet are still not taken seriously.…
