The Selection
In this novel by Kiera Cass, not even a corrupted society can stop a girl's ambitious dream to make her own decisions. America Singer is a sixteen-year-old girl who was trying to figure out where she stood in life. She lives in a modern caste system. There is a total of eight castes and her family falls in the fifth division. The fifth caste is made up of musicians and other entertainers. She is reminded daily of her social status and how she has no say in her future, but then an opportunity is revealed. All she has to do is take it.
America lives in a futuristic community called Carolina. Carolina is roughly the southeast part of the Current United States of America. The treehouse behind America’s house is where America and Aspen have their secret meetings before America is sent to the Palace for the Selection. The story is set after a third world war. The characters include Prince Maxon, Aspen, Marlee, Celeste and the king. The protagonists are America and Prince Maxon. The antagonist is Maxon's father the king. The story begins in Carolina but the remainder of the story takes place in the palace. America spends most of her stay at the palace in the garden. 35 girls from different castes were entered into "The Selection" and America was one of them. Only one of them can win Prince Maxon. The selection is a competition to find a wife for the prince who is of age to become married. America enters to help her family's financial need but is hesitant to leave her boyfriend Aspen. Among the many problems in this novel America faces the challenge of letting herself move on from her previous boyfriend, Aspen so she can love the prince. She is torn and doesn't know how to make this decision. Either way, she will lose a valuable person in her
