Brief Summary Of 'Destroying Avalon'
“Destroying Avalon” deals with bullying. Alice and her cluster from the first day of school bully the main character, Avalon. Avalon suspects Alice is the ‘supreme’ bully, yet it was one of her best friends, Sukey, who has deliberately caused her to experience a mental breakdown. I am going to write a diary that would thoroughly describe Alice’s feeling when she was suspected as a bully.

Diary is a text type that allows one to express one’s feeling without fabrication. As the story is written in Avalon’s perspective, readers cannot know the emotional state of other characters. A diary in other character’s perspective would provide a diversified understanding of the story. The diary would be written informally and in Alice’s tone as expressed

When the theme of bullying – more specifically cyber bullying – was introduced through the characters, my immediate response was feelings of sympathy towards the victims, Avalon and Marshall. Everyone is bullied at some point, but the bullying August went through was cruel. It began with calling him names, such as “monster”, “rat boy”, “freak”(p.139), and so on. It advanced to Julian leaving notes in August and his friend’s, Jack Will, lockers. At the end of the year, Mr. Tushman, the middle school director, had told him he “wished he and Jack would have came to him about the notes”(p.473). Even though teachers are supposed to be mature, it doesn’t mean they always act that way. They didn’t mean to be rude, and August knew that, but it bothered him even when they would stare or hesitate for “a millionth of a second”(p.75). Bullying like this, especially for kid as young as August, can…

Like almost other kids, she was trying to follow whatever her older brothers do. But because she is a girl, so instead of getting a gun, she could only play with her bow and arrow. This is the turning point of the story, when the “accident” happed and completely changed Alice’s life. She was shot in the eye by the BB gun of her brothers. The doctor said that Alice would likely to be blind, not only one but both eyes. She was terrified but what she care the most is not about whether she could see or not. It is her beautiful that she cared about. She scared how people would look at “the glop of whitish scar” on her eyes. She was no longer the prettiest and the cutest girl. For six years, Alice did not raise her head and stare at anyone. The scare took everything from her: her beauty, her pride and her person from inside. Alice asked her mother and sister whether she changed. What does she really mean by the word “change”? Her beauty or her personality? The answer was “no” but this was because Alice’s mother and sister did not want to hurt her or because they really thought that she had never changed? What they saw in her is her personality not her appearance. However, Alice at that time was only a little girl. I do not expect she will care or think deeper about things and people around her. The eight years old girl only cared that people would never admire or applauded her again. To the little Alice, beauty was too…
