Brief History of Windows
*Brief History of Windows
After reading the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, Gates contacted Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the creators of the new microcomputer, to inform them that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for the platform. In reality, Gates and Allen did not have an Altair and had not written code for it; they merely wanted to gauge MITS's interest. MITS president Ed Roberts agreed to meet them for a demo, and over the course of a few weeks they developed an Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. The demonstration, held at MITS's offices in Albuquerque was a success and resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the interpreter as Altair BASIC. Paul Allen was hired into MITS, and Gates took a leave of absence from Harvard to work with Allen at MITS in Albuquerque in November 1975. They named their partnership "Micro-Soft" and had their first office located in Albuquerque. Within a year, the hyphen was dropped, and on November 26, 1976, the trade name "Microsoft" was registered with the Office of the Secretary of the State of New Mexico. Gates never returned to Harvard to complete his studies. Microsoft's BASIC was popular with computer hobbyists, but Gates discovered that a pre-market copy had leaked into the community and was being widely copied and distributed. In February 1976, Gates wrote an Open Letter to Hobbyists in the MITS newsletter saying that MITS could not continue to produce, distribute, and maintain high-quality software without payment. This letter was unpopular with many computer hobbyists, but Gates persisted in his belief that software developers should be able to demand payment. Microsoft became independent of MITS in late 1976, and it continued to develop programming language software for various systems. The company moved from Albuquerque to its new home in Bellevue, Washington on January 1, 1979, after the former

“Gates invaded the network and installed a program on the main computer that sent itself to the rest of the network’s computers.” (“Bill Gates.”) Introducing the first virus, the crash that entailed was no small feat. Once it was revealed that Gates was involved in this he faced major repercussion for his actions. Together, these two instances brought major complication for Gates and his family at the time of their occurrence. Nevertheless, they show how even before his junior year in high school, Gates had already established a fundamental understanding of computers and how they communicated with each other. Moving beyond Lakeside High School, Gates attended Harvard University in 1973. Focusing on his studies for nearly three semesters, he quickly shifted this spotlight to home computing and software integration. Inspired by recent news of popular home computer the Altair 8800, “Gates knew where he wanted to be: at the forefront of computer software design.” (“Bill Gates.”) Pursuing these goals only aided in heightening Gates and Allen's sense and proficiency in the broken programing languages of the late 70s as well as granting the two a wider perspective in the emerging tech industry. As established, both Gates and Allen…

“Bill Gates, in full William Henry Gates III (born October 28, 1955, Seattle, Washington, U.S.), is an American computer programmer and entrepreneur who co-founded Microsoft Corporation, the world’s largest personal-computer software company. Gates wrote his first software program at the age of 13. In high school he helped form a group of programmers who computerized their school’s payroll system and founded Traf-O-Data, a company that sold traffic-counting systems to local governments. In 1975 Gates, then a sophomore at Harvard University, joined his hometown friend Paul G. Allen to develop software for the first microcomputers. They began by adapting BASIC, a popular programming language used on large computers, for use on microcomputers. With the success of this project, Gates left Harvard during his junior year and, with Allen, formed…

He served as a congressional page in the U.S. House of Representatives after high school. He scored 1590 out of 1600 on the SAT[12] and enrolled at Harvard College in the fall of 1973. While at Harvard, he met Steve Ballmer, who later succeeded Gates as CEO of Microsoft, and computer scientist Christos Papadimitriou, with whom he wrote a paper about pancake sorting[13]. Bill Gates never pursued a specific course of study while a student at Harvard but he did spend a significant amount of time using the school's computers. He remained in contact with Paul Allen and joined him at Honeywell during the summer of 1974. Later that year, the MITS Altair 8800,[14] based on the Intel 8080 CPU[15], was released and Gates and Allen saw this as the opportunity to start their own computer software…

The idea that would spawn Microsoft germinated when Paul Allen showed Bill Gates the January 1, 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800.[7] Allen and Gates saw potential to develop an implementation of the programming language BASIC for the system.[8] Bill Gates called the creators of the new microcomputer, Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), offering to demonstrate the implementation in order to win a contract with the company. Allen and Gates had neither an interpreter nor an Altair system, yet in the eight weeks before the demo they developed an interpreter. When Allen flew to Albuquerque, New Mexico to meet with MITS, the interpreter worked and MITS agreed to distribute Altair BASIC. Allen and Gates left Boston, where…

It all began in 1991, during the time of monumental computing development. DOS had been bought from a Seattle hacker by Bill Gates, for a sum of $50,000 – a small price for an operating system that had managed sneak its way across the globe due to a clever marketing strategy. Apple's OS and UNIX were both available, though the cost of running either was far greater than that of running DOS. Enter MINIX, an operating system developed from the ground up by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, a college professor. MINIX was part of a lesson plan used to teach students the inner-workings of an operating system. Tanenbaum had written a book on MINIX called "Operating System" and anyone who had picked up a copy would find the 12,000 lines of code that comprised MINIX itself. This was a big issue; due to the fact that all know (well published) operating systems to that point had been well guarded by software developers, thus making it difficult for people to truly expand on operating system mechanics.…

T HE value of the media in the development of the Nigerian nation-state became prominent in the struggle by the Founding Fathers of Nigerian nationalism against British colonial rule and imperialism, mildly in the late 1920s and much more forcefully from about 1944. As the struggle intensified, and colonial ruleinaugurated a process of tactical retreat through negotiation with the emergent yet fragmented political class, the media acquired a front seatand status as the mouthpiece of the anti-colonial struggle. In this role, the media and individual journalists experienced all forms of vicissitudes and punishment by the colonial authorities.…
